It's not that his doctors are so good they can push stage iv pancreatic cancer into remission. It's that his other doctors were so bad they told him it was stage iv.
It's likely that Trebek isn't actually "near remission" but it's also likely that he either did not have stage 4 pancreatic cancer, or he had one of the rare, less virulent strains.
My guess is both.

my dad got diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer like, 3 days before Alex Trebek. He was given 3-12 months with treatment. He opted for none(lifelong smoker). His health took a rapid nosedive and he died in 2 WEEKS; blood sugar became completely uncontrollable and liver crashed. Pancreatic cancer is no fucking joke, get tested and throw money at it. I know why he didn't(bad eyesight, low quality of life, worth more dead than alive) but make an informed decision based on your family and situation guys.

You can pretty much survive any disease by living a healthy enough lifestyle (diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, etc.), even into old age. At some point though, you just get too tired of it all and let the body shutdown permanently.
