Hollywood can make actually a very successful adaptation if they make one significant change - make Mikasa the main character. The plot stays the same but we see everything from Mikasa's point. Her feelings and experience is the central line in the plot (I can already see Mikasa vs. Annie confrontation in the second movie). Then it will be the new Hunger Games and will make gorrilions of dollars to a studio.
