The christian symbolism was for the cool factor. The show is actually about the walls people put up via personality flaws, and the last scene of EoE is Shinji & Asuka breaking down their walls (she lets him in, he reaches out). There's a lot of symbolism for that. Like AT fields and the fact that Shinji's carpet design is an AT field around him when he's sitting on the bed, for example

Its really really shit. The only people who praise it, watched it when they were young. Its basically babby's first anime and thats how they put up with all the bullshit the show has and call it a masterpiece.

I watched it in my 20s though and holy shit was it rough to sit through. Its just hot garbage. The mc is a huge bitch, rei is a literal robot and asuka is fine except she gets ruined later too.

Just dont even bother, its a waste of time. If you want a starter anime just watch cowboy bebop or something, but if youre a kid then evga might be for you.

People who have a strong distaste for NGE most of the time go into it already kinda knowing what it's about and hearing about how it's "deep" and "symbolic" it is when i think in reality, you can take everything at face value and get a way more "comfortable" experience with it, for example if you were to go into NGE with the mindset that it's gonna have deep meanings, you subconsciously make it sour for yourself because you're looking for meaning in the littlest things and when those little non existent things you're looking for could possibly not even exist, you start to get annoyed with the "inconsistencies" when you could just take it at face value. It's not a hard story to understand, i don't know why so many people say this, it's not as convoluted as some people might say, well, at least that's how i personally feel.
Am not saying NGE lacks some deeper meaning, that's what you could get on your 2nd rewatch of the show, since you picked up on everything from the first viewing you can start to pick up on little things you've missed before.
All am saying is don't ruin NGE for yourself because other people dislike it, make up your mind for yourself, why even ask? Just make your own judgments, it's obviously perfectly fine disliking NGE, but don't ruin a potential joyous experience for yourself because some other people dislike it. Make your own judgments and decide for yourself. If you like it you like it, if you don't you don't. You don't need to like everything.
