I guess enough time has passed that the current day high schoolers and undergrads don't have regular contact with Vietnam vets. An relative of mine was in it and used to tell a lot of stories about being drafted and serving as a infantry grunt. Still remember his story of how he and his bud would sleep on the top of ammo crates. Not just to get out of the dirt for a night, but rather in hopes that the enemy would shoot at it and cause an explosion. They didn't care at that point and assumed they were going to die a horrible death. Wasn't desperate enough to suicide, but wanted a quick death. I was skeptical whether this story was true, but seeing him break down crying immediately after saying this removed all doubt.
