Feathers are GOAT, but like many things some razor handles like certain blades for your face. I started with an old 50's Gillette silo and a shit ton of cheap Derby razors, Wilkinsons and Feathers. The latter were the only ones that gave me a consistently good shave. When I upgraded to a Merkur Futur adjustable, I could dial each blade in to cut perfectly to save additional money.

Assuming it's not just a shitty shaver, clean your foils every few days (not just hair but sebum and skin cells can clog them up) and oil your cutter bars every few weeks. Also experiment with your approach. If your is too sensitive after a hot wash, try just dry shaving before a shower. If your shaver is a dual head with symmetrical and asymmetrical foils, try leading with the asymmetrical to get stubborn hairs without having to do too many passes. If you have to press too hard, you probably need to adjust your technique to work smarter not harder. Regardless, there's a couple week adjustment period for your skin. Spend a while doing the best job you can before irritation starts setting in.
