This just looks like a regular anime with a big budget... The trailer is packed with animation tropes that remind me of Kyoani's worst excesses, in a bad way. I used to love anime but recently it has started to bug me that it's all seems to tread over the same ground. You can tell everything about a character from a single glance. You know exactly what they will sound like before they speak. The constant low-level boner-baiting in literally every single character movement. Of course I get tired of this right before it becomes popular to be into it.

What makes Ghibli movies so good is that there are almost always multiple layers in each scene. For example in Spirited Away you can literally see little stories taking place in the background at almost any time. It feels like everyone in the movie has agency.

You just need to learn to dig through the shit and find gems. Almost every season there's at least one show worth watching. Last season it was the second season of Mob Psycho 100, this season Kimetsu no Yaiba is pretty good, if a bit generic, next season there's a show about superpowered magical firemen that looks interesting etc. I can give you some other recommendations too if you want

Background characters are just part of the background, because who cares about them? The whole world revolves around two teenage lovebirds. That's my theory anyway.
