I actually wrote a paper on this. Readers/viewers have hero bias or protagonist bias. We tend to sympathize greatly with characters that we know and from whose pov we see things. We find it incredibly easy to justify horrible behavior and truly heinous acts. Walter White is a perfect example of this. In the beginning he's just a man trying to leave something behind for his family so he's not a complete failure. But he keeps going further and further down a dark path, until eventually he orders the death of women and children without remorse. He becomes an absolute monster. But still, we sympathize with Walter and want him to succeed. We find ourselves wanting this monster to "win," and become some kind of untouchable kingpin.
