The Dude is the straight man who reacts to weirdos around him. I can name like 20 different funny scenes and characters. Even the goons Mr. Lebowski hired were pretty funny. And that sets up the ridiculous conversation about the guy's race and whether "Chinamen" is an appropriate term.
Walter is just the loudest of the weirdos, but everyone has their moments.
The Dude even gets a few good jokes in there too. Like how he gets yelled at, and as Lebowski is still ranting at him, he calmly tells his assistant he'll be taking one of the rugs. It's awesomely passive aggressive.
