RBMK reactors aren't supposed to explode has become a meme but in fact RBMK reactors have every capacity to explode. Modern reactors and even western reactors during that period didn't have the same properties that could lead to the circumstances that could cause an explosion.
The U.S.'s own nuclear disaster wasn't an explosion but a contamination leak which was quickly contained for the most part.
So far there have only been 3 major nuclear power plant incidents that have been catastrophic. Chernobyl, 3 Mile Island, and Fukushima.
There have been many core meltdown incidents, but all minor. The last one that wasn't catastrophic was in 1985 on a Russian sub.

Actors who speak Russian, and the CORRECT Russian, with the dialects and the slang and various little tidbits, are rare in the West, and you'd never get this sort of thing made anywhere where there ARE that many good slavic actors. They knew that teaching their cast Russian would make it look half-assed and clunky, so they just take us to the translation convention and ask for suspense of disbelief.

Nuclear reactors designed after the 80s-90s are all much safer in comparison due to changes in the design of the reactors and much stronger containment in case of a meltdown, which is far less likely to occur.
We've learned so much over decades how to design better reactors and power stations. The main issue, and the only real issue that persists with nuclear power today is waste management and transportation of nuclear waste. Due to political NIMBY actions, the site at Yucca mountain, where most nuclear waste had been planned to be stored at in the US is no longer an on-going project, mostly because of concerns moving the spent nuclear fuel in containment vessels either by rail or by trucks to Nevada from other parts of the US.
Also, too much bureaucratic red tape and the cost of building a nuclear plant is many times more than building a cheap natural gas power plant. The only way to make nuclear competitive is to make regulations on fossil fuel usage and CO2 pollution to the point where nuclear is viable again, and come up with better ways to store spent fuel, or recycle spent fuel in newer generation / technology reactors that utilize spent fuel for energy, such as MSR.

Pupper duty, cus I don't like dogs, so it wouldn't be that big a of a deal emotionally and it's literally both a mercy for the dogs and a public service for the people, had to be done, or they'd be spreading debris all over the damned place and breeding mutants doomed to a life of sickness and pain. Those dogs were all fucked anyway, better quickly with a bullet than rotting slowly over months from the inside out due to mutation, cancer and infections.
Also pupper duty is WAY lower risk, which is why they had new conscripts do it. Roof duty is basically auto cancer of some sort and if you fuck up at all like the guy they focused on did you die horribly. He's almost certainly dead, because he looked at the core for about 10 seconds, and then tripped on the way out, extending his exposure, dude almost certainly got a 50/50 there.

we don't have the grid or ability to completely switch over to solar, but if we take time to develop it it could be the answer to all our energy needs. I don't know anything about how many solar panels / whatever it would take to be equivalent to your average nuclear plant, but probably quite a lot of land would be required. Luckily, we have tons of land in the US to build various types of solar farms, not just panels, but solar boiler facilities that can generate energy even overnight, or energy storage to capture excess energy in the day and conserve it for night usage.
The issue is we should have made the switch to renewables and dumped billions upon billions into R&D several decades ago, but now we're so far behind even China in renewables that it's just pathetic.
Wind and solar are the future, but it's going to take a lot of investment to get there and coal, oil and natural gas won't disappear for a long time because we've stabbed ourselves in the foot by ignoring the issue for decades now.

More of the reason we don't see a lot of new nuclear plants being built is not just because fossil fuels are cheaper in general (right now), but because there's such a negative public perception of nuclear and no one wants a nuclear plant built near where they live because they automatically think of fukishima, or chernobyl, or three mile island and think every nuclear plant is a ticking time bomb like that.
I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think only like 1 new nuclear reactor has been built in the US in the last decade or so, and other projects have been scrapped / cancelled due to lack of funding / interest in nuclear energy.
