The reactor was at a heightened energetic state with the control rods pulled all the way out. The only thing absorbing neutrons was water and steam. That was all that kept the reactor from being pushed over the edge. When the rods we're lowered, graphite displaced the water and steam, thus allowing more neutron to split uranium and give off more energy for a fraction of a second more.

A helicopter, after going through the shit that the reactor was farting, had its blades love-tap against some crane cables in episode 1 while dropping sand and boron. In real life, that crane was I'm guessing, part of the Liquidation efforts and the helicopter crashed against its cables around the time of episode 4. Khomyuk and this random misplaced moment are my only criticism of the show.
