I also like the history of inventions, I learned how steam engines work, how they were developed and the different ways they were utilized over time. The history of photography is really cool as well since you can actually see how it developed over time from surviving examples. Not really historical events per se but whatever.

I've never taken a photography class. I didn't think they'd even bother teaching you the mechanics and chemical reactions necessary to make a camera, just how to take pretty pictures.
It's simpler if you start at the beginning. It's fascinating how chemists figured out what compounds were sensitive to light and used a camera obscura to focus the light into images. Daguerreotypes, tintypes, ambrotypes and the like are the simplest form of photography mechanically speaking and are fairly easy to understand.
