Kit "crying" when he finished filming was the best acting he had through 8 seasons.

That's probably because it is so. I reckon they use a single-camera setup and film closeups. They do so even for battle scenes, that's why it's so badly cut with unnatural acting. The trend started from season two, I believe, and it became stronger in further seasons. Nutter directed the body burning scene in episode four with multiple cameras, as evident from the documentary. That, and the exclusive use of cold color temperature making every scene look identical. The cinematography reached it's height of bad quality with episode three, with legitimate criticism from the audience at the bad lighting. All in all, your average TV show these days.
