These designs were made up by the writing team. We had a meeting where we discussed details like this and one of the lead female writers went on some rant about the patriarchy and it evolved into making the oppressive Nilfgaard into literal "dickheads" with shriveled scrotum's for armor. Any attempts to push this off by those of us who are familiar with the subject matter were immediately overruled by the majority female team leads.
So that is why you get this.

Couldn't this very easily be some mockup armor that is used for early choreography to get the extras used to the bulkiness? In the video clip it looks like they're just fucking around not even filming a scene.
