HBO actually took that turd and turned it into something somewhat entertaining. God, if I didn't have the show to be my official canon, I don't think I'd finish ASOIAF. ADWD was that bad of a book.

If D&D had done a faithful adaptation of the book to TV, I wouldn't have finished it. I grant that the characters have issues, but I think that largely stemmed from them having to clean up the tangled mess that George gave them. They had to force characters to do odd things in order to get the plot back on track.

The Winterfell scenes and the epilogue was some of the very best writing in the book series. Sure the book as a whole was very uneven but the series did nothing to capture the aforementioned strengths of the book.
