I think Ridley’s problem these days is he tries to cram too much plot and thematic narratives into his movie. There’s moments and sparks of real interesting atmosphere being built up in these movies, but they never settle on them for long before moving on to the next action/exposition packed scene that has to move the story along at a mile a minute.
Covenant, like Prometheus, would’ve been better if it spent more time with it’s slower exploration scenes through the forests or caves and let us really feel like we were on an alien planet and feel the terror of the unknown instead of just jumping from one plot point to the next making us feel like we’re only being teased with a good movie.
It’s like these days his philosophy of filmmaking is that movies are just longer trailers (which seems to be the philosophy of most mainstream directors as well)
