A group of "elite conscripts" are trained to fight humanity's first extraterrestrial enemy. Do to the extreme distances,speeds and resultant time dilation involved with galactic travel, the conscripts find the earth they return to increasingly changed. The main character falls in love with his female squadmate, only to be assigned to different divisions in different parts of the galaxy, doomed never to see eachother again to do time dilation and high casualty rates.
The war ends with humanity completely alien to those "fortunate" enough to survive the 1000 year long war, which as it turns out started due to a misunderstanding. Their pain and suffering was in vain, and they opt to leave earth behind and start what they remember as humanity anew on a different world. Miraculously, both love interests survive and live the rest of their days on this new earth.
