Guys like the firefighters, yeah, they got such a massive dose that they basically liquified when their cells tried to replace themselves, but a "lethal" dose of radiation is a huge range of probabilistic determination. Anything that will shorten an average lifespan is a lethal dose, but if you got a low-level lethal dose at 60, you may not even manifest any symptoms before natural causes take you out anyway.
