Patrick Rothfuss is a shit writer who's literally redefined the lack of limits for a Gary Stu. He believes that by giving a character a massive legacy and story, then altering it at the end where he's a 'bitter, jaded old man with no magic' makes the character suddenly redeemable.
Except the entirety of the books are just Kvothe wanking and Harry Potter. The nigga's teachers are literally Snape and Dumbledore. This dude enters the faerie realm as a virgin and lays down the dick so expertly that he entices an immortal fae queen who's been fucking men to death for 5,000 years.

He does the same thing that airplane books do, where each book is a 'cold open' on the context and situations of the world, while trying to add more layers to it. Usually its just fucking tedious because it takes about 300 pages but once he's back off the ground, I find he stays consistent. Newer books especially.

I just can't get over how stilted and awkward his dialogue is and how juvenile the overall plotlines seem. Like he writes two armies marching to a city for a confrontation and everyone just kinda stands around while the important characters have their anime magic duels. Malazan has the same problem with the dialogue IMO, after reading a lot of fantasy you just realize no real person would ever say this shit, even if they ARE a 5,000 year old cynical cunt.

The dialogue can definitely be clumsy. It seems whenever he's writing the older characters, especially the war generals and all that shit, he loses the tone he goes for.
I noticed in some of his simpler books the dialogue flows a lot better. Mistborn's Wax & Wayne series is a good example of this - the banter between the two of them, along with Wax's interactions with Steris are great as the books develop too. Just started Stormlight Archive 3, so not much to speak to there yet.

All this Sanderson talk aside, a series I'd love to see adapted for television again is the Dresden series. At least a re-attempt after whatever the fuck that Syfy series was. Great Dresden casting, piss poor everywhere else.
