Reminder that Jaime Lannister's character arc is not one of redemption, but SELF ACTUALISATION and INDIVIDUALISATION. When we first meet Jaime, he doesn't give a shit about anything because he doesn't see anything as in his control except fighting and fucking. For Jaime, higher authorities/powers, specifically his family and previous monarchy (Aerys' making him kingsguard as a part of his own personal schemes against Tywin). Throughout his arc, Jaime gradually comes to realise that HE is in charge of his destiny and life choices after losing his hand, the once defining feature of his being, this is evident through his interactions with the White Book, sending Brienne on her mission with Oathkeeper, throwing Cersei's letter into the fire. Jaime is not going to be redeemed as such, his arc is a question of self-identity and redefining who he is, be that good or bad, through his OWN CHOICES, NOT becoming a "better" person.
Theon is GRRM's redemption character, NOT Jaime.

It's not writer's block, and it's not laziness, he wrote himself into a situation he doesn't know how to resolve and it killed his motivation to write TWOW. He wrote and worked on a lot of other stuff in the meantime that was more fruitful than trying to solve a knot of plots. This could have something to do with it:

Stannis takes deepwood motte in the books instead of going to the dreadfort. He manged to do it with the help of the northern clans. He captures Asha (Yara) and she is reunited with her brother. The northerners see in Stannis someone who can take the fight to the boltons and northerns are rallying to his cause.

In the book Stannis liberates Deepwood motte, captures Asha(Yara in the show) Greyjoy and turns it back over to the Glovers, winning their loyalty.

Self contained within the show itself, Stannis' arc is 100% coherent and it's great. The problem is that DnD had no interest in understanding or portraying the character from the books.

Though we must concede that we don't know where his arc is going in the books, while DnD swear George told them his ending. I can believe Stannis being defeated after burning Shireen but the context will be very different - it's possible it just happened earlier in the interest of time.
