>there are children on this board RIGHT NOW who don't think the book was making fun of him
These same idiots think Fight Club was "pro masculinity"
Andy Dick
>t. phony
>there are people on this board RIGHT NOW who didn't realize Holden is a war veteran in a 16 year olds body
It’s sad that I know this is the Catcher And The Rye solely because of Life is Strange
You weren't forced to read it in high school?
Just a reminder that JD Salinger hated the idea of a movie adaptation of his novel and opposed it at every turn while he lived
Michael Cera
That is sad
Just a reminder that you're gay LMAO
>13 years old: Holden was right about society
>20 years old: Holden was just an angsty teen
>29 years old: nah, he was right
On of my favorite books
And it would be a terrible idea because you'd either have an inane amount of narration or you would ruin everything by taking the internal thought out.
>tfw I read it on my own in highschool because of Ghost in the Shell and never ended up reading it as mandatory reading because I dropped out
He liked the idea of playing the lead.
>16 year olds body
That's so hot.
That was a play.
Hot take, you sound like an interesting person irl.
Fight Club is about being pro masculinity then retreating from it. It’s simple nature, the same way any man, for example a thousand years ago would be a fighter or soldier and then retire from it. You’re a brute and then you kill off the brute for self preservation.
Elijah Wood.
Tobey Maguire
>Would you say that fans who celebrate him or celebrate anarchy are misinterpreting the intention of the story?
>No, not really. Because they are kind of recognizing the phase where they discover their personal power through acting out against the world.
>Would you say Fight Club is more of a critique of violent masculinity, a celebration of it, or both?
>Boy. I wouldn’t say it’s a critique. I think that because it’s consensual, it’s OK. It’s a mutually agreed-upon thing which people can discover their ability to sustain violence or survive violence as well as their ability to inflict it. So, in a way, it’s kind of a mutually agreed-upon therapy.
There you go friend. Now literally never post on this board again.
It's the same thing with the people here who read Notes From Underground and think "wow, literally me...."
Nah that was To Kill a Mockingbird.
I don’t think there are any people of color to discuss in Catcher in the Rye, but I could be wrong
So it means I'm a fucking loser or something, it's still literally me.
American literature isn't worthy of a high school English class
We had to read both in my school. Also we read Invisible Man, which I think is a much better book if you want to read about racism or whatever.
Meanwhile australians are borderline illiterate and have never made a book of note.
came here to post this, he's perfect
True, your point?
I hate Paul Dano but his cynicism, attitude and youthful look makes him a great choice.
Is the school he gets expelled from real?
No. But its probably based on one of the school Salinger got kicked out of.
>takes a drag from a cigarette
>sees a billboard ad and mumbles under his breath “fuckin phonies.”
Times you acted like Holden?
Holden never says fuck.
Dano will improv to modernize the dialogue.
Based Dano.
>everything has to be ironic and satirical and lead back to the mainstream status quo view
The book was neither mocking Holden or glorifying him. Art is trying to show you more than just on what pedestal to put a certain viewpoint.
you're a tit
I wasn't sure if it was making fun of him but I found him an insufferable fucking cunt. Catcher in the Rye felt like a perfect capturing of the teenage thinks-they-know-it-all faggotry. I'd say that's impressive and a literary achievement but it seems like the author is as much of a jaded cynical misanthrope that it was more of a self insertion than a well adjusted person capturing the mood of being a teenager.
Chuck (inb4 sneed) literally said that the book did promote masculine messages though
Imagine a Netflix adaptation lmao
>Life is Strange
>tfw Maxine will never be real
There are so many people I meet who hate Holden and therefore hate the book because "dude, hes such a pretentious guy and I don't know, it's so annoying reading it" when in the end he realizes that he is in the wrong and needs to be more accepting of the joys in life after watching his sister play around.
>see ironic Yea Forums post
>calls it cringe then leave
Me :)
Would be even worse than George Clooney's Catch-22 adaptation.
James Franco.
This book is shit. The MC is supposed to be the good guy but Holden is just an asshole retard.
this is what im talking about
why do you hate paul dano?
Classic
I don't understand how people always shit on Holden. Did I just hallucinate half the book or is Holden obviously severely traumatized following molestation and rape at school and abuse from his parents?
you hallucinated half the book user
Even though Holden was a shit I still liked him regardless.
>that bit where he finds out that his roommate went on a date with his ex, so he seethingly grills the roommate about whether he fucked her or not, tries to beat him up then gets easily knocked the fuck out by the roommate
He was eternally my guy after that. I can't understand why people hate him but love other characters like him like Pete from mad men or whoever the fuck
>mom give birth to new brother
>leave the house and never come back
he was so spot on on somethings and so cringey and wrong on other things.
The scene with the underage prostitute gets me everytime.
He didn't say he was out of high school.
Why must he be good or bad? Why can't a character be grey?
Has all the capeshit soiled your brains?
When the MC does something that's code for the author saying it's a good thing to do. Literature 101. J. D. Salinger is a retard.
My next door neighbours bought a persian rug and had a really good time doing it so I called them out as being phonies.
Books like this can only be adapted as mockumentaries. Same deal with Catch 22.
Your statement is wrong. Holden is an archetype of the unreliable narrator.
t. someone unironically too dumb to enjoy literature
The ending was really touching and even though holden was a silly asshole a lot of the novel he was still a fun, relatable character . I think the book also does get a good deal right about human behavior in general
>These same idiots think Fight Club was "pro masculinity"
But it is, faggot.
Or may as well be. The author thinks "toxic masculinity" is a bullshit meme.
as a zoomer, aren't we all?
