>Oscar-nominated actress Emily Watson plays nuclear physicist, Ulana Khomyuk in Chernobyl.
>Ulana Khomyuk is a fictional character, based on a collection of real scientists who helped with the Chernobyl investigation.
imagine having to create a whole character from scratch simply because a show cannot be greenlit without filling the minimum quota for stronk, independent, STEM-top of the class wymin
>And we’ve kind of got to tell a lie: but we’ll go back into the history and there will be people where, historically, there wouldn’t have been, and we won’t do well on that. We’ll say, ‘To the hell with it, this is the imaginary, better version of the world. By believing in it, we’ll summon it forth.’

Chernobyl is an all ages all genders show. Perfect to watch with the family after sunday dinner.
Isaiah King
youd just swallow anything the jews fed you, wouldnt you
Connor Sullivan
The show has lots of fake characters
This guy who goes on a 1984-style rant about controlling the masses was fake too and just meant to be symbolic of the Stalinist-era mindset of the Old Guard that still held sway in the party in the 1980s
Thank god so far they haven't shoehorned any "diversity" yet.
Hm where have I seen that actor before?
Aaron Lee
>falsifying history Literally a docu-drama This dude's speech was probably the worst scene in the show because it was so on-the-nose

There was an actual woman victim of Chernobyl. She was a plant security Guard who stayed at her post all night as others fled and abandoned their duties and shortly after she died of radiation exposure.
No pictures of her have survived and she had virtually no family
Though as a Soviet history nerd, this is probably an inaccuracy. The soldier wearing the red stripes of the Army when Party officials/sites were guarded by the KGB (as were nuclear plants)
>bit part about the metaphorical older soviets who lived and died for the party vs >One single female scientist who finds out about Chernobyl on her own, goes to the local party head and insults the male politician then gives the poor female secretary medicine then goes back to her office to get the Chernobyl blueprints she has for some reason and then figures out about the sand and boron via secret message with another female then somehow puts together what is exactly wrong without ever seeing the plant, talking to people who were there. Then drieves six hours straight to Chernobyl and with no credentials walks right up to the head scientist and tells him why hes wrong and is at a meeting with the leader of the Soviet union in the next scene. This goes well an beyond a simple composite character. She single-handedly solves a problem without ever being involved or invested in the event with no explanation.
Robert Myers

I don't recall any of the other scenes as I'm rewatching it but if it's anything like the pure reduction of the two scenes I did remember, I think you are delusional and should go to the infirmary.
Joseph Harris
I know this is a bait thread, but how did she know the blonde gf was pregnant? Had they ever met in a previous scene?
>There is a male scientist with her also running through the closest power plants to call is not like making a call is something hard to do
>She begs the officer at the checkpoint to let her in and tells him of her credentials and the danger and the officer reluctantly "arrests" her in order to bring her over there yet she walks right up to the head scientist
Joshua Reyes
The wife was holding her husbands hand up to her stomach and cradling the bottom of her stomach with her other hand when Ulana walked in
I don't care they condensed the scientists into one character as much as the Soviets would entrust the operation to only two experts. Really wish there were a dozen extras milling around the site in lab coats, occasionally handing Legasovic a bit of paper or something just to make it feel like the disaster was being taken seriously. There are loads of extras doing every other type of job, why would more scientists be confusing?
Jeremiah Bennett
I kind of understand the necessity of condensing a full collective of scientist that helped Legasov into a singular character.
Shes not as bad as some people make her out to be. They took liberties with the story but its fine since the character isnt in your face about current year political shit. The only thing that really bothered me was how confrontational she was with the party official, I dont think that would fly in reality but in the next episode she actually gets KGB'ed for something similar so whatever.
Justin Stewart
Party officials were a bit more chill post-stalin.
The KGB was always the KGB though, so yeah I agree that her getting KGB'ed in the next episode was realistic
John Adams
Honestly? I thought she would intrude in the show but she fits. Watson is an excellent actress to boot.
Lincoln Brooks
It was shit according to everyone, the actors and D&D. It got picked up because 1 person high up in HBO had a hard on for period dramas.
Zachary Perez
>Honestly? I thought she would intrude in the show but she fits. my dick fits in your moms pussy you faggot. kill yourself
To be fair she did say relatable not realist so that answer is out of whack.
Jack Turner
Criiiiiiinge.
Connor Perry
1. If she's based on real people they didn't create her from scratch. Open a dictionary. 2. Having all those people as unique characters would make the plot too long and confusing.
Ulana is a good feminist character because her existence does not detract from the importance of other characters. She works with Legasov and Boris as an equal, rather than as rivals. There is no, "Ha, gotcha!" Moment where Legasov is made to look like a fool by the wise woman, nor is there any scenes where Ulana gets "put in her place" by Legasov. They compliment each other.
And if you watched Episode 3, you will see her role has become that of Investigator; she's determining *what caused* the Chernobyl meltdown, rather than *how to fix it.* She's not stepping on the toes of any other characters, and neither are they with her.
women are the primary victims in industrial accidents, war, etc
Daniel Nguyen
>I dont think that would fly in reality It wouldn't. And neither would the coal miner / minister shit.
Daniel Barnes
>She works with Legasov and Boris as an equal, rather than as rivals. There is no, "Ha, gotcha!" Moment where Legasov is made to look like a fool by the wise woman, nor is there any scenes where Ulana gets "put in her place" by Legasov. They compliment each other.
That's because those events happened, just not with a single character, but with a group of scientists and engineers that knew how the reactors worked and advised Legasov in the stuff he didn't knew.
Also, a lot of those scientists investigating the events that lead to the reactor exploded got arrested too.
>There is a male scientist with her also running through the closest power plants to call That guy who basically existed to be talked down to and show us how intelligent she was? It was a bit blunt, let's be honest. I listened to the podcast and they chose a female to show the egalitarian views of the soviets in regards to things like science and medicine. Personally I think they went a bit overboard.
James Wright
Depiction of the events should be as accurate as possible, so this character should not be there. But they already fucked it up in certain areas like the radiation burns (they shouldn't show up immediately as red on contact, it should take days)
Kayden Nguyen
>imagine caring about history >imagine caring about all media being subject to diversity quotas
Yeah bro, fucking imagine.
Sebastian Powell
Show me the HBO documentation that says this character was created to fill a quota.
Jordan Nguyen
fucking redpilled post user. had no idea
Michael Williams
>Depiction of the events should be as accurate as possible, so this character should not be there. Yeah man they'll just hire dozens of nameless people in labcoats who call Legasov in 30 minute scenes where they describe what's going on. Except some of those labcoat wearing dorks might be women which still might get people wailing in anguish that women were portrayed competently.
Or maybe they'll condense all of those minor side-characters into a composite character who never once flaunts her femininity (a hallmark of "bad" female characters) and explores an important aspect of the Chernobyl disaster (what caused it) while the established Strong Men go back to fixing the issue.
If this show suffered from diversity quotas than we would've seen more blacks and women. None of that happened here.
Because it's a contrivance and not historically accurate
Gabriel Moore

Jaxon King
it's not a fucking documentary retard. Drama shows will ALWAYS take liberties in something.
Grayson Morris
It's funny you say that, because there probably IS internal documentation stating roughly that. This is sophistry, though. What he calls "quota", some might call "virtue signalling" or just "progressive ideology". People feel compelled to say and do things out of peer-pressure, ideology and sometimes even a deep-seated subconscious desire not to appear racist, sexist, misogynist, etc. (like when all the White guys are excessively congratulatory to the successful Negro actor or businessman because they actually know his kind is inferior. "Quota" implies the internal bureaucracy of HBO explicitly demands it; this isn't necessarily the case, in the same way that movie studios don't explicitly say: "we want a hot woman for the role", nevertheless they would still only pick an 8/10 or higher. In this case, they have created a Mary Sue and it undermines the artistic integrity of the show (which has clearly taken pains to otherwise be extremely accurate and historically realistic). It is clear to me that external considerations were responsible for writing this character into the show. At the very least, you should abhor this decision as an affront to any normal person's aesthetic sensibilities, whether you agree with the underlying politics or not.
They do this all the time, remember the 3 non existant sheboons that where the masters minds behind nasa?
Justin Evans

In the beginning of episode 2, she miraculously deduces in a split second that a nuclear incident has occurred. She preposterously insinuates herself into high level meetings with the Central Committee. She always has the right answers. The show goes out of its way to portray her as the genius while Legasov is a bumbling buffoon who doesn't think of all the eventualities quickly enough. She also takes the initiative to interview the victims and surreptitiously infiltrates the Moscow hospital to do just that. We're getting close to the definition of a Mary Sue; then consider this character is a figment of the writer's imagination.
Ryan Ross

And all these scientists were men but for some reason the sum of all of them is a woman! William Ramirez

No mate a liberty is when they need to condense events and maybe have a certaiun character say simeting that another character saud for the sake of the getting the plot rolling as happened in the opening scenes of ep 1 OR making the smoke plue big an black as opposed to reality where it was merely an almost invisible steam cloud that barely rose 100ft. Injecting a non existent character into an historical drama to appease feminists is not the same thing.
Go back to **ddit
Joseph Young

William Campbell

they inserted a female character in the form of the nurse that Doc Roe bonds with. There's not historical proof of such a thing happening. It's literally the same thing.

This is why i only read books now, not sure why i still come here when i haven't seen a movie or tv show in 2 years. Movies and tv only exist for subversion and pushing an agenda now, it hasn't been art for arts sake for a long time.
Brandon Kelly
ah ok what does it matter what role the woman plays if it's completely ahistorical anyway? (Which the Chernobyl woman isn't, she's just a composite character. As the other guy said, "According to Smithsonian, 40% of chemistry PhDs awarded in Soviet Russia between 1962 and 1964 went to women." You can read about that in a quick Google search about that character.) Most people hate when dumb love stories are inserted in the middle of a war movie, especially if it didn't even happen in reality.
No body wants stronk womyn in movies. We dont want them anywhere. Deal with it. Men died putting out the fires, cleaning up the site and building the sarcophagus. Not women. Fuck off with your 'women were equal in the USSR' bullshit you communist. Go collect your welfare.
Lincoln Adams

Brody Watson
How would you have done it then? Have random cuts of 100 different characters solving small parts of a big problem?
Juan Moore
She is the 100 scientists combined who together solved most problems.
Chase Jackson
she's just a representation of many, many scientists. It's a dramatization and they obviously didn't want to have a hundred or more characters in that role.
Jonathan Turner
He would have done it exactly the same way the show did it, except the character would be male.
Sebastian Sanders

Jackson Smith
I wouldnt mind her but shes meant to represent hundreds of scientists and yet the show makes no attempt to communicate that whatsoever. Instead she does pretty much everything herself she says anfd scoffs at the contributions by everyone else. The show had the oppurtunity to show other scientists at her office but instead they had them not show up to work. I dont get why they didnt just include that whole group, possibly add in other labs they communicate with in bit parts and keep emily watson doing all the things she does as the leader/mouthpiece for the group. They could have actually cast more women as scientists in those roles for that too, especially especially if they wanted portray the number of women apparently working in STEM fields in the soviet union at the time. The problem with her character has nothing to with her being a woman, the problem is that everything ulana does singlehandedly makes her come across like some flawless superbeing which just feels out of place when the rest of show is about ordinary people from all walks of life coming together in huge numbers to try and take on this huge monster of a problem
Brayden Wood

Honestly i don't think it's such a problem. The show focuses on bringing a national (globally even) problem on the screen in a very intimate setting and it works by focusing on the characters. You honestly think the main character solves all the problems single handily with one bureaucrat backing him? Of course not, in real life these two guys were doing constant meetings, creating new groups to tackle problems and it prolly was pretty boring. But they showed most of the facts happening in a setting that makes the show very atmospheric and dreadful. Reality is kinda boring guys, hence why we obsess over tv shows so much.
Jackson Hernandez
It was probably written by a genetic woman, Now go dilate
Michael Cooper
Sucks that the scientists who actually did the work don't get acknowledged in the show cause of this.
Anthony Jenkins
Well if you look at history, Germany was always outmanned, outgunned and the fact they came so far is super impressive. Throwing millions of soldiers to the battlefield is not impressive at all. Especially with the backing of US industries who just kept producing weapons when other countries were busy fighting a war. I mean, the french army had as many soldiers as Germany, and they BTFO them in a matter of weeks.
Asher Martin
Yeah having to represent something as being a group effort is just too hard to show on film. Saving private ryan should just had tom hanks show up on d day on his own, on a single boat, capturing the beach and taking on every single german soldier singlehandedly.

I think the proper way is how they handle the Godzilla in that Hideaki user movie, the only problem is that it was boring as hell and the acting was horrific

>burgers unironically believe Saving Private Ryan is a historical documentary
Yeah, turning the entire crew into one mick was a bridge too far in my opinion.

Convenience no doubt, obviously it would be unfeasible to name drop 100 characters within the narrative.
Doesn't stop it sucking that they don't get credit for the work they did.
Better that atleast some would get mentioned than none in my eyes.

imagine being one of the scientists that she replaced you're eager to see how accurate they portray you but you find out that, you and all the other scientists were replaced with one woman
Yes schlomo, we get it. Hitler was cartoonishly evil and the germans were all retards that weren’t all that impressive and spend resources to systematically kill 6 million chosen ones while fighting a war on two fronts.

Oh wow this doesn't sound at all like hollow praise, i mean they talked about "brilliant victories". Surely there is no intention about it, and lying about numbers to make the russians look good.

if the composite character was male, you wouldn't even notice anything being wrong. You wouldn't think "wait, where is everyone else?". In the back of you mind you would accept that every dramatization of a historical event does stuff like this every time, because it's necessary for dramatic purposes.
Asher Nelson
The soviet got twice more military casualties than Germany. The nazis were battling on multiple fronts and the russians only had to push in one fucking direction
Hudson Miller
If it was accurate in all its details, it wouldn't be a very compelling series. All stories take artistic liberty.
The helicopter didn't crash in the immediate aftermath of the event, that was weeks later during the liquidation effort but it serves to show the stakes at play in the immediate aftermath and the ethical strains versus necessity that Scherbina and Legasov were put under.
Literally the only reason bitter fags in this thread are bitching about this character is not because she's a composite character of all the scientists who worked on chernobyl but because she's a woman (which in the realm of the soviet period, was more common than in the west). Unironically have sex ffs

These are just facts. I wasn't making any value judgement about either party here, just saying that the Germans had millions of men thrown into the fight as well. Soviets were fucking scum too. I'm Finnish. These are just facts. Are you saying the numbers are false? That was just a random article from wherever, but it's true that the Germans had the numerical superiority in the beginning. so? That's not what I was talking about. And again, they started the fight so if they get outmanned and have to fight on two fronts, it's really their own fault.
Connor Turner
Truth be told I only learned there was a group of scientists after watching it.

my concern is that they didn't portray Albert Einstein, the inventor of the atom. Now people will not know how the atom came to be, they will probably think it was done by a woman scientist. They really should've shown those random ass noble scientists and not condense them into one character. Now the world will never know Pyotr Vlodanovich or Sergei Gregaroilivich.

Imagine caring enough to make a post about how you don’t care despite you obviously caring enough to make a post trying to mock people discussing something they are about. Retarded golem
Michael Cruz
Guaranteed non of the people complaining have even seen the show
There legitimately probably was in internal memo at HBO recommending adding women to the show. Or one of the execs told the showrunners they would need to add a woman. The point is that it's not always cut and dry. HBO won't write up a corporate constitution saying "we must have a female lead in every new project" but in effect that is basically what happens these days, and on some level of the internal bureaucracy you can be confident there is talk about it.
Brayden James
Prove him wrong. They put ideology above reality, until they came face to face with it
Chase Sullivan
She literally ruins the show
Eli Powell
So you think the people at HBO talk about stuff they are gonna put in their shows? And when casting characters they might talk about stuff like age and sex? Could you imagine if all of Hollywood did this?
Brayden Nelson
It's a mini series, they had to minimize the number of the cast. And it's a fucking series, yeah a lot of things are always put over reality.
Cooper Hill
There's also female producerrs who always have to be militant about feminism. That female producer on James Bond hired a fucking sex coach! They did 24 Bond movies without!
Austin Thompson
I guarantee that you're a faggot
William Wilson
>I's a propaganda Fixed that for you
Brandon Mitchell

>She single-handedly solves a problem without ever being involved or invested in the event with no explanation.
You're distorting the truth. She's clearly shown to be cooperating with Legolas. She's depicted as competent and dedicated to her work. Holy fuck dude, she's shown to be sleeping in the office, how does that not tell you THIS IS NOT AN ORDINARY THOT?
You wouldn't make a problem about half of your post if it was a male character. You people are worse than tumblr SJWs, you are just trying to find reasons to be triggered. Nothing about that character is unbelievable or ridiculous.
Imagine if you made this much of a fuss over the fact that the firefighter commander drives to measure the radiation on his own. >AAAAH AN OLD BOOMER WOULD NEVER DO SOMETHING SELFLESS LIKE THAT, HISTORICAL INACCURACY
Juan Martin
why are fags so vulgar?
Kevin Wood
Pretty sure you missed the point of her tweets, retard. Literally have sex.
She was pointing out and redpilling people about college, how a degree is worthless and you should skip college. Connections > a degree
Jason Reyes
>we've had a lot of fun on the set. It's always great to work with an actress of Emily Watson's character. She really adds depth to this character. And just in general everyone's having fun. And it is a fun story to tell, because it is the story of how a good reactor turns bad.
Tyler Barnes
Because dutifully staying at your post to get irradiated to death is masculine self-sacrifice. it's noble and tragic (and true), but it's not all that empowering and doesn't fit the narrative of women outdoing men in STEM. Better to make snappy, clever, Yas-Kween, scientist who proves that women can do scientist.
Josiah Ross
even the quiet girl in the back of the class?
Luke White
The funniest part is, there were many women amongst the Chernobyl liquidators. Nurses, doctors, personnel of the cruise ships where the workers lived, cooks, dosimetrists - they worked hard. Pripyat's chief architect was a woman, and she overlooked the evacuation. They didn't even need to make things up, but they did, because they just can't not to.
You forgot we're told she works too hard. That's the first thing we hear about her in her very first scene.
Logan Howard
honestly, that was the best way to do it I mean you understand they can't put a show without such character, so her in this place was like minimal possible impact we didn't get like female firefighters or polibureau members or actual station personnel and female scientist in one of many research institutes of soviet republics is acceptable
Samuel Sanders
But the Game of Thrones pilot is literally the only good episode
Cameron Nelson
>They didn't even need to make things up, but they did, because they just can't not to. They don't care about reality, they like to thnik they can bend it into any shape. We live in a permanent state of propaganda, even harmless cartoons are injected with subversive themes
Ryan Ortiz

>Make composite character to represent all the various actions the many scientist in the CCCP and their debates and investigations, in order to streamline the narrative and have it gel with the much faster pace the show is taking in showing the relevant events > >Make the character a woman >REEEEEEEEE

Octavia was better. When she had to submit to Pompey... and when she seduced her little brother... 10/10
