Exactly what I was thinking. Raging Bull literally has worse everything. Every single thing he mentioned, Goodfellas does better. This is not up for debate. Good fellas is seamless from beginning to end. It's Scorsese at his absolute best. He made it look effortless. The fact that it appears so simple IS the amazing part of the cinematography, editing, pacing, etc. The movie is well over two hours long and it feels like it barely crests one.

I won't argue that first point since it's all based on perception but for the second one that's just objectively true. It's very competently well shot but there's nothing really fantastic about it artistically. Some very technically challenging shots that are impressive like that restaurant walkthrough but honestly who cares.

Raging bull has better cinematography. Raging bull has better written characters. Raging bull has a better written marriage drama. Raging bull has a better utilized sense of time and place in it's setting. Raging bull has incredible range emotionally and dramatically. It doesn't have to capitalize on the gangster stuff for appeal. It's just a miraculously beautiful movie from top to bottom.

You are incredibly wrong on the setting "time and place". Raging Bull could have taken place anywhere from the 1920s to the 1960s. Goodfellas is obviously between the 70s and 80s.

When Goodfellas came out there hadn't been any good mafia movies since The Godfather 2. Plus it was based on a real person. It's a great movie and it makes you want to watch it a few times.

I meant in terms of storytelling. Who gives a fuck what literal decade a film takes place in? Raging bull makes very, very good use of repetitive locations and their use over time. It works out in the film's favor.
