Why do they claim the premise is "making fun of bad movies" when 90% of the jokes are just pop culture references?
MST3K
Well you wouldn't make pop culture jokes while watching a good movie now would you
They watched Marooned and it won an Oscar. These guys are hacks.
CAMBOT!
*kill yourself*
it won for vfx. have you actually seen it? it's boring as shit.
Joel > Mike
>90% of the jokes are just pop culture references?
MST3K went out of their way to avoid timely pop culture references. The problem is, later millennials and zoomers lack basic cultural literacy so you can't distinguish between legit american 20th century culture, deeper more obscure trivia, and 90's current events (which they really tried to avoid). The upshot is you dont get better than half the jokes, so you think it's all stale. It's not stale, you're just ignorant thanks to growing up on the Internet. Older "nerd" culture fare like MST3K could help you if you were open to it and used it to school you.
As it is, you are completely incapable of contextualizing anything you experience.
Actually, it's more like not even second can be filled with jokes ribbing the movie faults, so it's other jokes, (often times relying on pop culture references), or nothing, and that nothing is usually much worse. There is also the meta-joke which is that expressing some witticism or reference shows how dull and unengaging the movie actually is.
>when 90% of the jokes are just pop culture references?
More like 10%
Mike>>>>>>>>>>Joel
>MST3K went out of their way to avoid timely pop culture references.
This is complete and utter bullshit. They're not making witty bon mons about film quality, they're telling Patrick Swayze and Kim Catrell jokes.
Well, that's filler, and nobody should defend that.
>they're telling Patrick Swayze and Kim Catrell jokes.
You think these were "timely pop culture references" in the 90's. You have no ability to contextualize anything. The ironic thing (i'm sure you're more than familiar with 'irony') is that YOU KNOW EXACTLY who those people are, you just have no idea if or how or why they should be laughed at. You have no ability to contextualized because the internet and the culture stagnation of post 9/11 west as robbed you of that.
Incidentally, Kim Cattrall starred in one of the films featured in an MST3K episode (City Limits, i think) so either you're knocking them for mentioning the actress that's literally in the movie or you just missed an obvious call-back, in which case, like i said, you're ignorant.
Try to lay off the relentless shitposting and burning-down of everything that crosses your path, maybe? Perhaps you should take a break from Yea Forums and read a fucking book. You fucks are just way to salty for your own good.
You wrote all that but we both know it's bullshit.
>YOU KNOW EXACTLY who those people are,
Well, no, not really.
>inb4 zoomer
It didn't take long (as the numerous mistakes should indicate) so no worries. And i'll take your wet noodle response for what we both know it means.
>Well, no, not really.
You have no idea how honest that timid, unsure response is. I respect your candor, user.
>ITT: angry 40 year olds who think they know reference humor
>c'mon fellow zoomers.
>lets combat the abuses of online reference culture
Who are you quoting?
>where the fuck am i?
>talented musician despite stolen keyboard
Now that's a fucking reference
The only reason I know who Swayze is because the name is distinctive and we share the same first name. I know at least once, I saw a character was played by him, and I thought, "Oh, so that's what he looks like." I have no idea who "Kim Catrell" is.
Pop culture jokes are the easiest, laziest, and most poorly-aging jokes. Even the Simpsons had plenty of jokes that basically (reference), they were almost always bad. Some of these jokes might actually be wittier than they seem somebody who's largely unfamiliar with the reference, but usually, they are there in place of a good joke because one isn't always at hand.
Whatever your angle was, that rely just doesn't make sense.
>listen...i'm telling you...
>i *clap* dont *clap* know *clap* stuff
ok, ok... i believe you.
periodic reminder that everything was jim mallon's fault
It is really that unbelievable? I was born in 1992, and didn't watch MST3K until about fifteen years after it was off the air.
>people itt didn't watch the show when it was still airing
begone zoomers
i'm pretty sure randumb "throwbacks" and non sequitur shit like Family Guy did has ruined pop culture references for good. These fags can't tell the difference between fanservice "member Storm Troopers?" -tier shit and legitimate jokes that employ a reference to something in popular culture.
Throwback pop culture references that you guys are so salty about really weren't a thing in the 90's when MST3K was being made. It didn't really take off until the early 00's.
no, user. It's not unbelievable at all that you don't know stuff. You had me at "The only reason I know who Swayze is..."
