This is the MCUs version of MJ. The true to the comics one is never going to show up. Everything about MCU Spider-Man so far has shown that they don't care about making any of these characters true to the comics or any other version. This is what we are stuck with sadly.

Sony got a lot of Spider-man right in the Raimi series - anything comic accurate would make you think back to the Raimi series so they have to flee from it because they know they'll be compared with Spider-man 2.
The director for Homecoming stated the intent to mimmick another shitty movie, including the idea of this incredibly ugly unlikable girl becoming the main love interest over the course of the films. Originally he wanted Zendaya all glammed up for a romance scene that would have occured in the prom in Homecoming.
There was also talk at one stage that the real Mary Jane would be the red-headed girl that was featured during a swinging scene. Shots of several red headed girls wearing iconic comic MJ outfits were seen dangling from a helicopter with Spider-man.
Those involved however had other plans and now we are not getting kino comic-inspired MJ. Instead Zendaya will be the MCU MJ.
