Historically complications come more from the gas pressure management rather than the nuclear fission proper, however the 2 systems are entirely related to each other like egg and chicken.
In Chernobyl the core went so hot so fast it instantly vaporized nearly all the water, the rather weak containment in which the reactor was built blew up vertically because of the sudden overpressure, like a pressure-cooker would if you didn't release the steam.

Same. I used to read about it all the time and I'm surprised how accurate it is and the attention to detail. Even Yuvchenko holding the door and the door touching him where he said they did in the interview, the faceless guy in the corridor, etc. I don't know how much time does the show cover "day to day" since the elephant's foot was found in December I think, but considering Legasov killed himself in 1988, it should appear.
