This is explicitly a socially backwards world controlled by the Catholic Church where women are still treated as socially inferior and science is all monitored by the Church agents, but I guess it's progressive enough that they let a filthy colonial be the Master of an Oxford college

Leftist Garbage.
As a Muslim father of one I do not want my children reading or watching this trash.

It's not leftist, it's just anti-authoritarian and anti-Catholicism. I hope HBO and BBC don't pussy out on the anti-Catholic themes like the movie did.

I will take Christian fellow Monotheist over God-Hating Satan-Worshiping monsters that create putrid garbage like what you are advertising.

>It's not leftist, it's just anti-authoritarian and anti-Catholicism.
The amount of retardation in this one sentence is mind-boggling.

isn't this oxford vs london though? what am i even supposed to be mad about here?

its because of diversity hires. they have women and minorities, and even women minorities in positions of power and import that they didn't in 2007.

Attached: 1548123987349.png (645x729, 63K)

You're supposed to be mad they cast a black man and a latino man and that Ruth Wilson isn't as hot as Nicole Kidman.
The only legitimate things OP is attempting to complain about are that Oxford 2019 doesn't look quite as nice as London 2007 (because it's a TV show, not a movie), and that Daniel Craig was the perfect Asriel and MacAvoy can't match that no matter how good an actor he is.

Imagine giving a fuck about this. You're pathetic and obsessed. Unironically blow your fucking brains out.

You do realize that hating the Catholic Church for its hypocritical garbage is not an exclusively leftist position.

>and a latino man
Isn't Lee supposed to be from the "country" of Texas and the USA is never even mentioned? For all we know their Texas is still Spaniards.

>and MacAvoy can't match that no matter how good an actor he is.
I'm more concerned about whether he can project the raw authority that Asriel is supposed to have. I'd have cast someone older and with more gravitas like Jason Isaacs.

The Golden Compass was a solid movie though it was too watered down to try and placate screeching evangelicals. His Dark Materials is one of my favorite series and I have high hopes for finally seeing books 2 and 3 given their time to shine. Wonder if they’ll have the budget for the final crazy battle at the end.

>You're supposed to be mad they cast a black man
I mean, we're supposed to believe that, thanks to the dominance of the Magisterium, Lyra's world is still extremely conservative in every respect, EXCEPT that they made a non-European the head of Jordan College. It feels like they're undermining their own point a bit.

Well, I don't think Miranda matches the description of Lee from the books... but that doesn't really matter, since what he looks like and what ethnicity he is isn't important to the character. You're right, their Texas could be full of Spaniards, and even if it's like ours, there are tons of Latinos in Texas.
>I'm more concerned about whether he can project the raw authority that Asriel is supposed to have
That's really what I was getting at with Craig. He has a look and aura of immense authority that I thought fit Asriel perfectly.

You have at least part of a good point. It doesn't really bother me, though.

I quite liked some of the casting choices for the Golden Compass and some of the aesthetic choices.
With that said, wait and see.

>Wonder if they’ll have the budget for the final crazy battle at the end.
The kids barely see the battle, they'll probably just use that excuse to have it mostly offscreen unless they plan on expanding Asriel's war in heaven subplot beyond the glimpses we get of it.

dafne is cute

Lets not pretend most people have such a nuanced position

eh hold up tho, weren't Lyra blonde in the books. I feel like that was important at some point because it meant she stood out from all the dark-haired gyptians and made her easy to spot.

what

whats his dark materials?

BBC pulled out of Rome because a fire destroyed their set and it was too expensive to rebuild.

There are very real criticisms to be made of the organized Church's hypocrisy and authoritarianism and anti-intellectualism without tipping fedoras.

A quote from Paradise Lost.

Why does TV always look like ass?

HBO and Lost are like the ony exceptions

You can make valid criticism about anything, doesn't mean you should always do it.

Im so fucking tired of the yellow filter, I wish we could go back to the 70s realism style of filmmaking again. Even Tarantino is using orange filter everywhere its disgusting.

I quite enjoyed The Golden Compass. When I found out there were more books I always wondered why it stopped there, but I guess someone wasn't happy about it. The series seems alright given TV budgets, so mildly interested in it even if it won't be as grand as the movie.

Any idea how this new series is going to do things? A season a book? Or complicate it and stretch things out so it never finishes either?

Based

It'll most likely be one season per book, from the trailer we can see shots that look like they come from the end of The Golden Compass. The Subtle Knife was a lot shorter than either Golden Compass or Amber Spyglass though, they might have pacing issues unless they pad it out with more Asriel stuff maybe.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA OH NO NO NO NO

based lewis

did anyone think the Golden Compass was bad? the casting and aesthetic were perfect, though they left out the dark ending for obvious reasons. Asriel, Mrs Coulter, Lee Scoresby and Serafina Pekkala were brilliant. Ian Mckellen was a fantastic voice for Iorek too.

The bear fight was great, as was the battle at the end. I've no idea why the film wasn't carried on

Lyra's Xxford is supposed to look like our world's Oxford but in the 20s or something, not the ultrafantasy crap from the film.

I think the TV version does a better job at being faithful to the book for these.

That shit was in the Narnia books? Not sure if I regret not reading past the first one or not.

The people criticizing the church are mostly authoritarian, hypocritical, and anti intellectual

It's one of the few films I dropped before the end. I don't think anyone who's read the book could like it, it's just so dull despite its excellent cast.

In the final book which was basically millenarianism propaganda, Susan doesn't get to go into heaven because she's more interested in modern life than in remembering Narnia.

>dude whatabout lmao

I know you faggots were stupid, but I didn't expect your contrarianism to go so far as to unironically screechingly defend the Catholic Church just because the libshits hate Christianity.

Susan didn't get to go to Narnia heaven because

>"My sister Susan," answered Peter shortly and gravely, "is no longer a friend of Narnia."

>"Yes," said Eustace, "and whenever you've tried to get her to come and talk about Narnia or do anything about Narnia, she says 'What wonderful memories you have! Fancy your still thinking about all those funny games we used to play when we were children.'"

>"Oh Susan!" said Jill, "she's interested in nothing now-a-days except nylons and lipstick and invitations. She always was a jolly sight too keen on being grown-up."

>"Grown-up, indeed," said the Lady Polly. "I wish she would grow up. She wasted all her school time wanting to be the age she is now, and she'll waste all the rest of her life trying to stay that age. Her whole idea is to race on to the silliest time of one's life as quick as she can and then stop there as long as she can."

Visually and cast-wise, The Golden Compass was movie was pretty good. From a writing perspective, they botched it pretty badly. It's got a lot of holes if you haven't read the books, and it was written with the assumption that it would get a sequel. Couple that with the mixed perception of the series due to religious whining, and it was doomed from the start.

If they can actually give it an ending then I'm all for HBO trying again.

The first two movies were great. Never watched the last one.

Third was alright. Not amazing, but decent. Another one for book 4 is coming out soon too.

>“There are two great powers,” the man said, “and they’ve been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit.
What Pullman hates is philosophy that tells people to stop thinking and just blindly follow whatever the priest tells you that the invisible skydaddy says, and instead we should make our own decisions and strive to be better.

The first adaptation was a disaster, there's no harm in trying again 12 years later.

Lyra a cute

You have to wonder how he feels about the modern day, where people are making the same stupid decisions but for entirely secular reasons

Who cares. It’s shitty Communist propaganda.

I saw the Golden Compass, although it's been a while. I can't remember anything in the movie explicitly mentioning that the Catholic Church or anything explicitly anti-religious. I didn't read the books and I don't care to, at the time I chalked it up to what was then the moral police (the religious right) throwing a shitfit because of something they had heard third hand about the books (this DEVIL BOOK by LITERAL SATANIST wants to ROUND UP CHRISTIANS and PUT THEM IN DEATH CAMPS fwd this email if you agree!!!). Now that the role of social watchdog has become the tenure of the SJWs I wonder how its going to affect pundit reception of His Dank MayMays. (Uhm, Sweetie, Another HBO Show With A Straight White Male Lead?....And Why You Should Be Concerned) But just like with The Golden Compass a decade ago, no one making these talking points will have actually read the books.

shut up heretic

Read the book instead, the film is garbage and cuts out a lot of the better parts.

cringe

Golden Compass is more unsettling due to its modern realism.

HDM version is so on the nose.

I believe the book described Lee as being a "New Dane" from Texas, and during his last stand he mentions a battle at the Alamo between the Danes and the French. So who knows how different their world's colonization of the New World was.

Why is she so ugly now. Mrs coulter was supposed to be beautiful. Also how come lyra doesn't know she's her mother?

But that's not even how it works.

Ever heard of the inquisition?

It's how Catholicism worked for hundreds of years. ordinary people couldn't even read the Bible because it's only in Latin, so they had better just shut up and do what the priest says or their immortal soul would be damned. then eventually when people were able to read it for themselves they found out that the Bible contains nothing about purgatory and selling indulgences and popery and then we got the protestant reformation.

I see, rewriting history as usual.

>durr reddit told me church anti-science

>Also how come lyra doesn't know she's her mother?
She had to abandon her after she was born.

Read the book, they're not portrayed as anti-science.

The Inquisition was actually less likely to prosecute than their Protestant counterparts. The sheer amount of distortions about the history of the Inquisition and the Reformation out there is really depressing as a student of history.

The 2007 Less Scorsby was up there with JK Simmons in spiderman for quality casting.

>As a Muslim father of one I do not want my children reading or watching this trash
When's the wedding?

You know he wrote the books long before Reddit even existed, right? Criticizing the use of organized religion for pure political power and infringement on personal liberty goes back a long time before reddit.

This site is infested with MIDF now

>being a christcuck in 2019
Is there anything more pathetic?
I can even accept muslims because they were always double-digit IQ cattle, but being white and religious is peak retardation.

I read the books as a kid and they were trash.

exactly, it was old stuff debated to death already

It's not about who was worse but whether it happened or not. The inquisition happened and condemned heretics. The church in HDM is a what-if version of the catholic church which continued to condemn heretics through the centuries.

sky scrapers are trash architecture they destroy the sky line and make cities more oppressive and dehumanizing.

>Read the book, they're not portrayed as anti-science.
Did we read the same book? In Lyra's world fundamental physics is called "experimental theology", the many-worlds hypothesis was suppressed as heresy because it contradicts the Mageisterium's teaching that there is only the material world and the spiritual world, all but two of the six alethiometers ever made were destroyed (the Magesterium kept one to use themselves, being the hypocrites that they are), and the entire Oblation Board started in the first place because some theologian decided that Dust was evidence of "original sin" and that became the orthodox theory, then they started "scientifically" cutting people's souls out to see if it would stop Dust hanging around them.

He could have targeted any other religion.

Lyra's Church is actually what-if version of the Catholic Church where John Calvin somehow became the Pope however the fuck that happened. Basically Catholicism reformed and became Calvinism, instead of a split between Catholicism and Protestantism.

>Ever since Pope John Calvin had moved the seat of the Papacy to Geneva and set up the Consistorial Court of Discipline, the Church’s power over every aspect of life had been absolute. The Papacy itself had been abolished after Calvin’s death, and a tangle of courts, colleges, and councils, collectively known as the Magisterium, had grown up in its place. These agencies were not always united; sometimes a bitter rivalry grew up between them. For a large part of the previous century, the most powerful had been the College of Bishops, but in recent years the Consistorial Court of Discipline had taken its place as the most active and the most feared of all the Church’s bodies. But it was always possible for independent agencies to grow up under the protection of another part of the Magisterium, and the Oblation Board, which the Librarian had referred to, was one of these.

also it's mean to be Oxford not some super city.

Don't expect most posters to be genuine/sincere. Most of them are young (I'm guessing mostly less than mid 20s), don't go to church (at least in the US), aren't typically low-class (which could mean religious), barely know anything about the bible, and are contrarians cause of modern left-leaning and social media having been mainstream a shit-long while.

I was raised catholic, baptized and did that communion stuff, and I loved the books even when I had faith. I see that series as the companion to the Narnia one, kinda like I love both Starship Troopers and The Forever War.

tl;dr: posters are likely youthful, contrarian, secular trolls looking for (you)s

>"experimental theology"
Which is a kind of science. Yeah it doesn't respect our scientific principles but their scholars still do have a certain liberty to conduct research which is then made to fit their religion. And it's shown that once a theory has been integrated the church is willing to accept it. So in my opinion it's not being portrayed as completely anti-science as long as their discoveries fit the church's narrative.

Makes as much sense as targeting a continental religion.

I generally think the new ones an improvement, however Daniel Craig and Sam Elliot was casting kino

I would suggest portraying the doctrines of Gnosticism as literally true is not very popular with Protestants either.

I've always suspected the reason they didn't do a second or third film was that someone eventually read the later books and realised there would be riots in America if they adapted them.

If you think it sounds a bit implausible that they'd spend millions adapting a book and not bother reading the sequels you are supposed to be basing a franchise on, you need to read Sonyleaks.

they start filming season 2 in june so we are getting at least the first 2 books adapted

In the book, and in the author's clarifications about what's plainly there, Susan doesn't get called back to Narnia because she's decided that it was a silly game and she's too smart and adult for that now. She's turned away from the truth. Even so, all that means is that she doesn't go back *just then* because her destiny is always to return having been touched by Narnia.

But screeching retards want to be all HURR WOMEN GO TO HELL, CS LEWIS SAID SO instead of engage with what's actually going on.

I mean shit, if it was straight Christianity she would have arguably have committed the only unforgivable sin there is- to deny God after seing, first-hand, direct and incontrovertible proof that He exists. Which she did, at leas twice, in Narnia.

>Basically what Lewis was saying is that being interested in the pursuit of happiness damns your soul
What the literal shit.

All that is said there is that if you reject the truth and try to contort yourself into something you aren't, you're going to have a real bad time.

Which, religion or not, is just common sense.

Are we really debating Narnia here?
The books sucked arse, the prose and the worldbuilding is Eragon tier, I never got the hype about Lewis

Ive never touched the books but Ive read somewhere that a lot of scenes ware cut from The Golden Compass that would have made the movie better where they included and since the movie wasnt very successful theres no chance of a directors cut release. The film itself was ok from what I remember.

Products of a different time and without the same cachet of the LotR series.

A bit ironic really; Lewis' thesis is that you never fight, you wait for God to fix things because just as keikaku and evil is dumb. Meanwhile, and whether Tolkien intended LotR to be allegorical or not, there's a clear through line of "Evil isn't dumb, and sitting around waiting for keikaku is retarded. If you see dumb shit happening, get off your arse and fucking fix it."

Catholicism is a dying religion. Its a combination of overplaying its hand in social control, systematic and still largely unacknowledged child abuse and in places like Africa, the offering is simply boring compared to Evangelical stuff and can't adapt as well to local needs and interests.

What definitely isn't a cause is Philip Pullman or the things you whine about when you want to pretend you are being unfairly treated.

Lets hope Dafne also gets some big tits.

He literally admitted that "picking" on Islam would likely get him murdered, that people being murdered for criticizing Islam is a relatively common thing.

There's no fucking magic way to parse that statement

Equating "criticize Islam" with "Go play in traffic" is an inherent acknowledgement that Muslims are dangerous, fuckface

She wasn't sent to hell though, she was just had to wait until she died rather than go to heaven when living because she wanted to stay on Earth.

The Chronicles of Narnia are kids books, why do people struggle with the really simple messages?

This was CS Lewis' dislike of people who dismissed things as being immature. He was fairly outspoken about it. There was nothing religious about it.

He wrote a good article about it.

>“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

He knows fuck all about Catholicism, he grew up in England and went to schools that followed Church of England.

You'll never reproduce so nothing to worry about.

Dude, you don't know the half of it. Anti SJWs and Alt-Right fanboys actually treat Christianity like it is the Gryffindor of all of the religions.

She didn't die at the train station, doesn't mean she won't go to heaven.

Yes, but Susan was the only kid, not just out of the Pevensie's, but all the kids who went to Narnia, who didn't die in that horrible train crash, and now has to live, get married, have children and die of old age!

She really missed out on Aslan heaven!

why didn't she become a big star?

I think the quote might also be a reference to lord Asriel using kids.

who knows, maybe didnt suck enough cocks

I hope we get to see Will and his dagger

Another way to look at it is that Susan was the only character who survived, because she grew up and didn't keep believing in talking lions and beavers.
Everyone else died in a train crash.

I am disillusioned Christian and also natsoc.

Yea Forums is built on contrarians who think they're smarter than everyone else. In the noughties the dominant force was angry Christians so Yea Forums was full of atheist edgelords. Now SJWs and leftism is the cultural norm so Yea Forums has become angry Christians. That, and the /pol/ invasion during the US elections.

The funny thing re: Christianity - Pullman says in an interview that

>Right, now time went on, and all sorts of repressions were set in train by the authority, more rebellions by the rebels and so on and so forth. Time went on in a continual struggle between the might of the Authority and the subtle promptings of the rebel angels. From time to time, men and women or creatures of other kinds would listen to the rebel angels and to the quiet voice of Sophia, and grew towards wisdom themselves. The great moral leaders of mankind, Jesus included, were people of this kind, inspired by the rebel angels and Sophia, not by the Authority. Whenever such a one came along and upset the Authority’s order, the Authority soon arranged for his churches and priesthoods to punish them and pervert their teachings, and so on and so forth – churches and popes, and the inquisition and the burnings of the heretics, etc. So Jesus in my scheme was a human being prompted by the whisperings of wisdom and the rebel angels to tell people some truths about morality. The great moral teachings of Jesus are unequalled. And the church has never taken a blind bit of notice of them. Apart from the church in Southampton.

tl;dr in Pullman's universe, Jesus was a fairly upright guy and a great moral leader but his teachings were perverted by the Church. So his real problem is with the dogmatism and authoritarianism of the Church, not the teachings of Jesus.

Bet you feel really smart after writing that. Yet it is the product of a completely mistaken mode of thinking that goes back to Plato. Asking for properties to be defined in terms of other properties is bound to be inevitably circular. As Wittgenstein pointed out, there are no "hidden links" between universals to be discovered in our usage of words, most of our concepts are simply based off family resemblances. The questions you are asking simply go to show you don't know how "advance", "knowledge", "wisdom" and "decency" are used in your language. Definitions are not discoveries, they are just rules for conversions.

This series is so fucking good and I'm glad they're remaking it.

This series has no appeal and will probably fail because of this.

It doesn't take place in 2019

I can only hope that this show has a better script than the film. The casting looks downright terrible.

it's clearly in white countries too

BASED AND ALLAHPILLED

too white
too busty

When did I say it didn't exist in white countries? It's pretty clear I just meant that considering it a white institution is wrongheaded.

>religious authority given to the Church, corruption and abuse of power arises
>religious authority given to the People, tenants are over-simplified and morality stagnates
>religious authority abandoned, short sighted hedonists allow civilization to decay
reeeeeeeeeeeee

I think it's telling that the only religion that gets attacked is Christianity. You don't see people on this site attacking Islam, Hinduism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Polynesian Polytheism, Shintoism, Judaism, or anything else. It's always, exclusively, Christianity.

>You don't see people on this site attacking Islam and Judaism
top kek

>You don't see people on this site attacking Islam
Are you fucking serious?

I see people attacking Ashkenazis, Arabs, Turks, etc.

Bait, they attack it because it's related to "shitskin". Christianity is attacked for what it actually represents.

You see people that leave Christianity attacking Christianity, that's true. You don't see people who left Islam attacking Islam as much because the only people who can do so without fearing for their lives are expats or people already living in an area where Islam is a minority. People feel less inclined to attack an ideology if they're not living in a place where it influences their life.

2nd books ok, 3rd is over long fedora tier mess with the side plot of the scientists hanging out with wheeled cows that goes nowhere

When you put it that way it does seem a bit absurd

The world of the dead is the best part of the series.

As if what kindled the hate mattered that much. They end up insulting Islam so what the guy above said was factually incorrect. Moreover if it was just about shitskins the other shitskin religions he mentioned would be shit on just as much, so I doubt it's exclusively a racial matter.

the other religions aren't invading their countries

Eh maybe its been a while but its stuck in such a long dullish book that I remember not enjoying the whole of it much. Also i thought connecting our world to the plot was a bit lame but that might just be me

>this religion is causing people to hate us, invade us and kill us, but it’s better to hate them cause they’re sandniggers and pretend I care about this religion thing to avoid backlash
Either you meant something this retarded or you literally just agreed with what’s written in the post above.

The only part I found dull is the beginning with Lyra and Coulter in the mountains.

Wrong

Don't be obtuse. Christianity isn't attacked for "what it represents", it's attacked because American evangelicals and moral guardians are insufferable cunts.

What about the scientist lady and the wheeled cows? That was dull

Only if you're an ADHD child who can't appreciate simple worldbuilding.

TL:DR

Well i read when i was a child so i suppose that fits. But new character, last book, complete tangent with no impact on main plot. World building or indulgent waste of time?

It had a purpose to the plot.
>demonstrate the diversity of worlds by showing us one with no humans but where Dust also influenced the development of sapient beings
and in doing so
>introducing a race of beings who can see and understand Dust
thus
>illustrating the loss of Dust through the massive holes in reality blasted by Asriel and the Church and explaining the consequences Dust
which hence
>sets up the eventual role of the protagonists in stopping the Dust flow

>The entire "Dark materials" series is a weak response to C.S. Lewis's "Chronicles of Narnia" classic, which all of "Materials" criticisms are blant misunderstandings of why Susan doesn't go to "Heaven". "Dark Materials" is also has the intellectual and artistic depth of any shallow Marvel Cinematic Universe film released post circa-2008, with the exception last book being pure propaganda to the authors ideology akin to "Miss Sloan" and "The Communist Manifesto".

Attached: Merry.jpg (200x247, 13K)

Sure guess that makes sense, you’ve probably read it more recently than 15 years ago. Maybe the series is worth a reread now im older

redpilled

>So when you look at the history of the Christian Church, of course you have to look at Jesus. But you also have to look at Paul and the other writers of the epistles, and the early church fathers and everybody else – most of them acting within, in order to support, or outside, in order to destroy, some sort of human bureaucratic organised structure.

>Ever since there has been a church, and ever since there have been councils to decide what was OK to believe and what was not OK to believe, and ever since we have had human authority in the form of priests and popes and so on, this has had to be a central factor in what people say about Christian doctrine. Either you’re contradicting what the authorities say, or you’re supporting it or you’re undermining it or you’re clarifying it, or what have you.

>The more we go on the further we get away from what Jesus said. I don’t think that Jesus had anything at all to say about such matters as the assumption of the Virgin Mary, or the infallibility of the Pope, or whether or not HIV positive men are allowed to wear condoms when they make love to their wives, but the church does, and this is what I’m agin.

based Wikipedia Merry poster

I think it is the sort of book that's worth a reread when older, there are a lot of things to notice in the worldbuilding and the subplots as an older reader that a child might miss.

What’s wrong with the Communist Manifesto? Bet you didn’t even read it, did you? Faggot retard

>The Womb of nature and perhaps her Grave,
>Of neither Sea, nor Shore, nor Air, nor Fire,
>But all these in their pregnant causes mixt
>Confus'dly, and which thus must ever fight,
>Unless th' Almighty Maker them ordain
>His dark materialsto create more Worlds,
>Into this wilde Abyss the warie fiend
>Stood on the brink of Hell and look'd a while,
>Pondering his Voyage; for no narrow frith
>He had to cross

The other title "The Golden Compass" is too.

>Then staid the fervid wheels, and in his hand
>He took the golden compasses, prepared
>In God's eternal store, to circumscribe
>This universe, and all created things:
>One foot he centered, and the other turned
>Round through the vast profundity obscure

Heh, Negro actors in everything now.

Im not a centrist fuckwit

imagine getting cast in the role of "trying to be as based as based sam elliot"

just the right size

I hope there will be extensive use of artistic license in the 2nd series (and 3rd series, if there is one) in order to undo the damage Pullman did to Lyra in books 2 and 3.

In the 1st book she is a compelling, likeable, headstrong tomboy and then Pullman drops her like a hot potato immediately after the end of Book 1 and she then just exists to be saved by Will.
