I have a question /RBMK/, Episode 5 ends with a cut to black as Akimov hits the AZ5 button, the last scene being a replication (compressed for time) of what leads to the accident. The director said he was filming it in a way like another movie where an accident is referenced, but not shown in full, over a whole movie, but then in the last scene is shown in full and ends just as it happens. The show's writer and creator has already mentioned all those incongruities in his podcast. Even before this article was released. The writer said that he wishes Midnight at Chernobyl had come out years ago when the show was already in preproduction. The inaccuracies of the show account for one of two reasons, either for dramatization purposes (which they tried to keep to a minimum) or shifting timelines or merging several characters as one entity to save time and keep the story going. The other is the limited available resources. They put in a lot of effort on research but it wasn't ever going to be as good as someone who fully dedicated themselves to it like a book writer.

Author has nothing against the show especially since it's boosting his book sales.

During the safety test the reactor cooled down too much, so they removed most of the control rods to speed up the reaction and get it back up to the right level, but this caused the water in the reactor to vaporise, causing the power to spike massively, then they hit the emergency shutdown button which lowers all the control rods at once, but the control rods are tipped with graphite which acts as a flux moderator, thereby increasing the reaction speed even more, so it exploded before the control rods lowered enough to shut down the reaction. That's a design flaw that they discovered 3 years earlier at Ignalina but the night shift team at Chernobyl weren't aware of it.

It was close contact with irradiated material (the door) rather than direct exposure, it was like the firefighter who touched the graphite moderator, but less severe because the door had only been exposed for a few minutes rather than the entire time the reactor had been active like the graphite. They certainly sped up the timeline of events for dramatic reasons though.
