>why doesn't Yea Forums talk about good older movies?
Because it's too concerned with either loving the latest capeshit/starshit/swordshit or le ebin trolling. Good movie discussion won't be found here.

That sounds very sad. Why come here if you don't want to discuss film?

Unfortunately old films are not as readily accessible as they were years ago. The entire filmography of Val Luten was available on Netflix at one time.

I agree TLW is excellent.

I am international and netflix has a terrible selection of old films. Am I just not searching right?

No, they have barely any pre-1970 films.

Just saw this one and it was really good post-colonial kino. Britain does not make soldiers like this anymore.

>closeted fag

Holy shit he’s literally me

He's like a lot of Yea Forums :(

That ending was so bad though lol, it really is one of the scariest books ever written though

The delirium scene was great.

The Best Year’s of Our Lives
Now, Voyager
Cat People (1941)
Shadow of a Doubt
Imitation of Life
Autumn Leaves
Caught
Harvey
A Patch of Blue

Just some pre-1965 films I like.

Never read the book! Any good?

Because Yea Forums plebs like this just say DUH ENDING for every film """critique""" they have

I liked the girl who talked that ‘40’s hep slang. “That’s ridic!”

This had an amazing cast, and a pretty fun plot with all the wizard shit

rapekino coming thru

It honestly might be my favorite book of all time

It’s understandable they would end it that way for a film released in the 40’s. But the whole point of the film is that he couldn’t stop drinking. He couldn’t even want to stop because it was so necessary to him.
The idea that he just decides to quit with the help of an excellent woman sort of undermines that.
The fact that it’s implied he’s gonna put it all into a successful book is even worse, since it’s better if he’s not really a writer; that’s just something he fantasizes about when buoyed up by alcohol.
The ending legitimately detracts from the film.

Harvey was surprisingly good and I guess influenced a lot of shows like that now. Is having a harvey a trope now?

TCM has a really good app you just log into with your cable provider info. They post pretty much everything they air and leave it on for like 10-14 days. Most of what they air is pre-1970 although occasionally they’ll do something retarded like air 4 Streisand movies in a row.

I loved the atmosphere and found it creepy as shit.

Attached: the-testament-of-dr-mabuse-movie-poster-1.jpg (966x1410, 317K)

TCM is a movie lovers wet dream. If you're wanting to explore older films, its the best place for it.

They're showing Pather Panchali tonight.

Yeah that is on me sorry, I assumed simple would be better. The movie was a great character study and one of the best examples of addiction I have seen in film. I am sure a lot of this board can relate to the movie in some form or another and for it being 70 years old that is something

If you have Comcast, there’s another channel called ‘Movies’ or something generic like that.
The chanel plays older movies many of which don’t seem to turn up on TCM.
A bunch of the movies are Black and White, but there are also color films that I was unfamiliar with.

For some reason I find a bunch of Deyer’s more “mundane” dramas more watchable then this, even though this has more going on in it.
Unfortunately, I think many prople might find Dreyer’s films the equivalent of watching paint dry.

Attached: The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928).png (1026x1603, 3.76M)

Is this any good?
I haven’t gotten around to watching it.

I've enjoyed the Dreyer I've seen, but its not exactly action packed.

Attached: Ordet.jpg (1000x1363, 287K)

This cover at sucks.
Movue was Kino though.

I've only seen clips from it. What I have seen is beautiful in its formalism, if you can set the ideology being espoused aside.

I like Dreyer, but haven’t watched this yet.
Will Yea Forums forgive me?

Seen this three times on 35mm, most recently at the Lightbox in Toronto, with Viggo Mortensen introducing the film and doing a Q & A afterwards. He said it is his favourite film and has seen it a hundred times. I like it, too.

Attached: 1528729695659.jpg (2048x1536, 116K)

Previous viewing was at TIFF '19 where Bela Tarr introduced it and also said it was his favourite film.

Attached: 1550536427162.jpg (2048x1536, 189K)

TIFF '18*

Here’s one of the movies I saw on the Movies channel.
‘The Lineup’.
-sort of like Hitchock but with a slightly different tone.
-B&W, wonderful cinematography.

If you want drama, a film called ‘Humoresque’ 1946.

There was another film I missed called ‘Laura’ 1944, that looked like it had amazing photography.

This would just be unkind to classic movie enthusiasts, since there are so many older films that are lost, or aren’t readily available on video or online.

This was rather good

another rapekino coming through

Attached: johnny belinda.png (960x1440, 3.28M)

Every time I look up an old movie, it's generally 98% to 100%, 10/10s, and 5/5's. then I watch it, and it's nothing great, sometimes hard to understand the dialogue with the low audio quality, and just a mediocre story adapted from a book which I know would be way better.

Get subtitles and watch more movies than the ones they show you in language arts class

Which “classic” movies did you watch that you thought sucked?
There are certain classics, like’Battleship Potemkin’ and ‘Intollerence’ that I think are way over rated, but others like ‘Metropolis’( long as fuck) that I love.

are you the fag that made

Good memory.
Not a fag.
If I was, I might actually like ‘Carrington’.

satan met a lady
the thin man

i have some more kinos but i will post again in a second so the thread doesnt archive while im trying to remembers

‘The Thin Man’ was excellent.

anything with william powell , arthur treacher, warren william,

Murder on the Blackboard (1934)

one of the more fun films:
Remember Last Night? (James Whale, Drunken Mystery)

mae west also is usually a sign of a good film. especially her first one. too bad she missed the pre-code era.

Is that "Diary of a Country Priest"? No user, this time it is you who have brought the kino.

theres a website of all netflix films, i sorted it by date once. theres like 2 films pre-1970.

old b+w movies are cheap i dont get it . netflix is fucking retarded. unless you like adam sandler, then theres a dozen of his "films"

That movie genuinely messed me up for a bit after watching. It is really good but hurt my soul.

It is truly amazing. Dreyer did original research in the actual trial transcript, which survives. Compare it to Aldous Huxley's The Devils of Loudon, which became Kenneth Anger's The Devils.

can someone recommend me movies to watch with my 91 year old maw maw? She doesn't like comedies

Thin Man is the highest kino. With it snappy dialogue and brisk pace, it also the kind of classic you can show to those who say they don't like "old" movies and they'll like it..

And Myrna Loy is my 1930sfu.

Testament des Dr Mabuse is literally my fav film ever. I love how Lang still had his actors overacting slightly, silent film style. I hate modern actors underacting all the time.

Can a nigga recommend me some silent films? PTP is still down and that's usually how I find movies.

The set work on this movie is incredible

THANK YOU

I Married A Witch (1942)

kind of blew my mind , the movie is what bewitched was based on. not a great film but has its moments.

i only watch only movies that criterion releases! im such a nerd XD

Nobody is being that guy, user. We just want to watch good movies.

Kino Lorber is where it’s at.
Literaly Kino.

For comedies, anything with buster keaton or harold lloyd. For adventure look up Douglas fairbanks kinos, especially The Black Priate is great for being in color. Silent Ben Hur is afaik the most expensive silent epic ever.
Also some classic German silent kino: Dr Mabuse (two parts), nosferatu, der golem, Nibelungen (two parts).
If you like silent drama start with Broken Lillies.

too bad they dont remaster everything they release. good selection though.

I don't get the hate. If a movie I like gets a Criterion ed I'll prolly get it as they're usually good releases, otherwise I'll get other releases if they're good.

Thanks user!

Didn't care for it at all. Why Liz stayed married to that neanderthal was beyond me.

I hate them because they release obscure asian and euro movies, and yet beloved classics like Bringing Up Baby and The Thin Man don't get Criterion releases because, hey, snobs don't care about them. They'd rather have their rare gook films that no one even remembers, god it makes me sick

Attached: 1554686263886.jpg (386x269, 16K)

Maybe those other films already have good editions, so it makes little sense for criterion to make one?

My absolute guilty pleasure.

>BUB only has foreign releases that are expensive
>thin man has 0 blu ray releases

Maybe the rights are too expensive or something? They did release a collection of early Lubitsch operettas.
On any case it's stupid to get angry because they won't release what you want. They can release whatever they feel like.

I wasn't the guy posting about it. And there's so much that doesn't get released because nobody gives a shit. Twilight Time releases limited pressings of old movies and they barely ever sell out. If criterion releases something though it will sell because of hipster faggots.

And I can get angry over whatever I feel like. I'm sorry, but they clearly have a focus on films I don't give a shit about. I'm supposed to support them because? what? Just like they can restore whatever films they want, I can hate them because of it. Meanwhile Arrow Video is doing god's work

Attached: 1552775720710.jpg (250x188, 6K)

>I'm supposed to support them
No you don't you tard. You can buy only releases you care about, or none at all. It's just so fucking retarded that people would get mad over this, as if criterion owed them something jfc. Then again this board is full of autistic retards.

you mean like the guy bitching about some guy that wants movies on blu ray? jesus christ. fuck off criterion shill.

WEW FUCKING LAD
unironically drink bleach and end yourself you autistic piece of shit

I want the movies I love to get remastered and released in high-def. This is hard to understand faggot? How dense are you?

Wanting one thing and getting something else is a completely understandable thing to be irritated about. It's not about being owed something, I'm just complaining on the internet. What, I'm only allowed to complain about things I'm genuinely owed? God you're retarded

Attached: 1552104212651.jpg (187x250, 5K)

Why do you specifically expect, nay, demand this one publisher to do that and not the gorillion others? Am I not allowed to call you out on your autistic retardation?

I'm a consumer, one of the few people who actually buys silly expensive things like blu-rays in this day and age. So yes, I expect to be catered to.

And "calling me out"? Lmao, you seem quite angry about someone who just wants a classic film to get a blu-ray release, what is your damage?

My journalism teacher had us do a 2-3 page film review/analysis paper. Most students chose current or recent flicks to write about. I did Giant thanks to an uncle who had me watch it with him and an 18-pack of beer. Got an A+ and the professor had me read the paper out loud to the class. Got a lot of claps but a number of students jelly. That moment inspired me to put out a zine (500 copies that I scattered throughout the campus).

>throws a massive tantrum because this one specific publisher won't edit the film he wants on BD

I watched it alone in a dark room with headphones on. The experience makes some difference I suppose.

Stfu redditfag

Literally:
>and then everyone clapped

>Got a lot of claps but a number of students jelly
Now we know why you don't post in /lit

Yeah no lasers or explosions. Isn't Giant like There Will Be Blood?

I unironically don't watch any movie made before the 90s. They look like shit and the acting is cringe. It's all black and white and looks outdated and old. Films have better quality now so why would I waste my time watching something of poor quality?
