To me, It's a film about the foul acts mankind will commit in the name of scientific progress, and also a statement on our current age of mass incarceration (rather than try and fix society, we change the prison system to be profitable in some way). Pattersons will to survive for the sake of his daughter is as antithesis to this, and shows that no matter the dreary state of mankind is in, the familial bond can still be a light in the darkness

This film was far better than Interstellar. They didn't need to give us so much exposition at the beginning (shots from Earth) and it felt totally off, like someone made a decission for these shots additionally, so the less intelligent people would understand. Yet it kinda ruined the style of everything happening on the ship. Otherwise great sci-fi. Pattinson is underrated.

I think there's a theme about how human nature is inescapable, whether good or bad. Its human nature to abuse others or use others for profit, but it's also human nature to care for your offspring even at the deficit of your own well being.
