Parasite because koreans often deliver goods.

>brainlet

lmao everyone btfo

Hopefully Parasite. Korea deserves Palme d'or.

Porumboiu. Ca sa va dam la muie, basinosilor.

palme d'or : Parasite
Grand prix : Pain and Glory
Prix du jury : Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Best director : Diao Yinan
Best screenplay : Once upon a time in Hollywood
Best actor : the guy from the hidden life
best actress : Adele Haenel for Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Camera d'or : Atlantics

My guess

Where are the camrips

Elle will vote for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood because Dakota is in it

Attached: hjIVRBKb_o.jpg (1365x2048, 604K)

I think those three you named are the most probable. I would like Malick to win. Juries usually don't pick the best rated film so we will see.
I want to see Parasite, A Hidden Life, Bacurau because of Udo, Pain and Glory, The Whistlers, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, The Traitor and Mektoub although the whole selection looks good. The film i'm most excited about is The Lighthouse which looks right up my alley. Based Pattinson and Dafoe in period psychological thriller with some horror elements sounds fantastic.

I'm most excited for Lighthouse and Parasite (I like all Bong's films, some are better others are worse but they are all creative and "different").

Based. Dolan BTFO.

Waiting for Les Miserables the most and I also hope it will win. It's a film that France needs.

I heard Parasite is the most ingenious and creative film at cannes this year. People who prefer Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Pain&glory even say Parasite is very innovative.

Isn't it just Training Day but in France?

>Bong
>isn't a bong
Explain, atheists.

based on this thread, I'm gonna watch lighthouse and parasite.
any others I should add to the list?

Portrait of a Lady on Fire if you dont mind feminism lesbian film

Holy lmao so many shit "art" movies. When is this finally gonna come full circle and people will start releasing feature films 20 mins long shot on an iPod touch with no editing.

The Handmaiden was one of the best films I've ever seen

What is remarkable about Pain and Glory?
I don't seem to get interested in this.
And it probably will win because Iñarritu sucking Almodovar.

Every movie in French will be bad, overly sexualized or pretentious as fuck. That's all those cunts produce anyway.

Self reflective film about filmmaker, struggling with his past etc. Seems like more subtle than usual Almodovar's films. Reviews are good so i'm excited about that one.

Bro, did you just have a stroke?

It's annoying that this year the competition is so genre heavy and The Lighthouse is not in competition despite being one of the best rated films of the whole festival. Only Parasite has better ratings. Dolan, Desplechin, Jarmusch and Kechiche are just taking up space in competition based on the ratings. All of them are in competition just because they have connections to the festivals or because they are french. Seems like Jarmusch and Kechiche would be better out of competition. Lot of people are claiming that if The Lighthouse was in comp it could have won some prize, like director or actor.

that's something only someone who hasn't seen the ones i like would say. climates maybe - the one with the unemployed guy and the one looking for the body and drinking with the country people out in the dark. those are just sequences of images that stand alone nobody even says anything
him and like two other people are the ones directors are the ones that actually make 'moving picture' as opposed to fucking filmed play

They are trying not to spoil the film. Bong even sent letter to critics, asking them not to spoil the film.
I'm talking about his last two films. Winter Sleep and The Wild Pear Tree.

>the international trailer
>nauseating music that makes it look like some fucking amelie shit.
>writing on screen saying literally "a family tragi-comedy"
ugh. you're right the other one looks better

i didn't see them because winter sleep is fucking 3 hours and i can only watch 6 seconds at a time now. well that's a shame he's gone down that route but thank you for letting me know

They still have nice visuals and locations but they feel to literary. He puts less emphasis on visual storytelling and more on people discussing certain topics. They are still decent with some great moments but overall disappointing especially when compared to Uzak and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.

Who cares you fucking onions faggot? The awards don't mean anything anymore
Stop being such a fucking cuck
you dumb nigger

Ok, but Paradite really looks too much like the japanese movie Shoplifters

Parasite will be more of a genre rather than drama like Shoplifters.

You have to be retarded to actually think this.

Its starts like Shoplifter or Ozu and go to unpredictable hitchcock thriller.

How long do we have to wait to watch these? When do d
Rips come out since no cinema release.

>caring what these fag critics think
Once upn a time in hollwywood is trash

Its from the trailer mofo. Looks similar

Yes. trailer looks like shoplifter. But from the reviews what I've heard, it started from shoplifter to really unpredictable supernatural thriller like US but superior version.

I've read

I'm tired of boring European dramas. Fuck Dardennes and Loach.

Well that's social realism. Dardennes and Loach only make films like that. And that's not only in Europe, Capernaum last year was the same shit as Dardennes and Loach but worse. Dardennes at least sometimes make something interesting.

You can't make up how fucking pointless cannes is

I don't know what do spanish critics have to do with the whole festival. Cannes is not pointless, it puts attention on some interesting films that wouldn't othetwise have the same amount of attention.

Albert Serra also won something for his degenerate sex in forest film.

>this year we didn't give it to mike leigh or the dardennes...let's give it to their korean equivalent!

Leigh and Dardennes
>Arthouse filmmaker

Bong
>Mainstream filmmaker

Retarded

There's nothing arthouse about them, they make completely conventional and unambitious dramas. There's not a single interesting frame in their entire filmography.

The capeshit of film festivals.

I would agree if you named Loach instead of Leigh. Leigh is not that political and he makes some interesting character studies.

That new Almodovar looks boring, desu.

I think it looks good, Banderas seems great. Whether it will be good or bad, it can't be as bad as the airplane film he made.

It also [promotes crap alongside the good stuff and ignores even better stuff for no real reason. Chances are, if you like the good kind of movies that get promoted at Cannes then you most likely would know about the films promoted at Cannes without the festival promoting them.

SPOILER ALERT
The film festival is just an advertisement for the Cannes film market, the biggest film market in the world.

The festival brings the journalists and the qts and the film market brings the producers and the money

Attached: marchedufilm.png (900x490, 25K)

You are right, i knew about most of the films from this years selection but there is still some interesting stuff to be discovered. This year for example i wasn't familiar with Suleiman and Triet so that's something.

>Sciamma

Holy shit. Palme d'or target film

The dude that wrote that is quite reliable so i believe that but i don't think Sciamma will win Palme, i still hope that Bong wins.

Dumb mothefuckers. Winter Sleep is a great, great film.
Almodovar and Tarantino shouldn't even be accepted in festivals.

It's good, very obvious with its themes and it takes too long to get into its predictable conclusion. The Wild Pear Tree was worse much clunkier than Winter Sleep.
>Almodovar and Tarantino shouldn't even be accepted in festivals.
Why?

There's nothing clunky, obvious or predictable in Ceylan's entire filmography, this isn't genre film...
If that's what you think about Ceylan's work then why are you asking me about Almodovar and Tarantino whose work is in fact derivative and predictable?

What's your opinion on Satantango?

>offhandly ask 'what's your opinion on Sátántangó'?
Do you know where you are, lad? I doubt more than 15 people have seen or know of someone like BT on Yea Forums at any given day.

Waiting for the blu-ray, btw

Well the character arc are somewhat obvious. As far as clunkiness goes The Wild Pear Tree had some jarring editing and visuals, it seemed they shot on different cameras or something like that. Well i agree about Tarantino but i disagree about Almodovar. Almodovar is derivative but some of his films are not that predictable, most of them are just enjoyable melodramas.
Satantango i like, i don't think it's Tarr's best film. It's not the best film out of the slow cinema movement but it's one of the better ones for sure. Definitely has some moments which could be described as transcendental although he did it better in some of his other films. Satantango has a few spots where his technique didn't fully work but still a great and ambitious film.

> I doubt more than 15 people have seen or know of someone like BT on Yea Forums at any given day.

lmao given Yea Forums does discuss a lot of shit but let's not pretend Tarr is some obscure filmmaker

At least we're getting hilarious reviews from this trainwreck.
>The programmers, in their infinite sadism, saved the worst (and the longest) for close to last. Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo (Grade: D) is a baffling passion project whose cruelly protracted runtime is eclipsed only by the monumentally tedious way it fills it. For an interminable three and a half hours, the Tunisian-French director Abdellatif Kechiche numbed our asses (and minds) with nothing but ass: a parade of gyrating, jiggling flesh, belonging to a group of hot but terminally boring French twentysomethings on summer vacation, burning a seemingly endless evening at a nondescript nightclub where the film—after a brief and comparatively enthralling prologue on the beach—strands us for its shapeless entirety. That this colossal bore, the walk-out disaster of Cannes (à la Sea Of Trees or The Last Face, only twice the fucking length of either), earned a spot in the competition lineup is the only evidence you could ever need that once you’ve gotten into this club, you’re in.

I expect nothing and I'm still disappointed

He is here.

For anyone who's a bit into cinema, no, he's pretty known and relevant. For the average joe on the board- and elsewhere? Then absolutely yes. These people DREAD subtitles, b&w, anything pre-2000( being generous).

You read some nice things here and there, eheh. I'll wait for that blu-ray as well, shame the old fuck stopped making movies, classic case of someone getting more attention after dying.

Don't get me wrong but I think you're approaching art films in a way that would be more suitable for genre films, you're latching on to things that at a higher level are insignificant.

I bet your opinion on, say, "The Mirror", "Traveling Players", "Taste of Cherry" and "Satantango" would be identical, based on your criteria.

Based Kechiche. By far the film I'm most interested in. He's made one of the best films of '00s and now some of the best of the '10s. Triggering to shakes the freaks of the world is a healthy bonus.

tell me when camrips are out

Why do you fags keep posting the critic scores (that include fucking letterboxd reviews) when the winners are selected by the jury?

Attached: 1540390074628.jpg (502x673, 95K)

How many bongs to awards?

It excluded letterboxd reviews from filter

I did talk about Satantango. I love Angelopoulos, Tarkovsky and Tarr. I haven't seen Taste of Cherry yet. The difference between Ceylan and Tarkovsky, Tarr and Angelopoulos is that the latter use visual based cinema. Meanwhile Ceylan is going more and more into the realm of text based cinema. I like visual based cinema, where the images are able to transport you into the film and the film has certain level of visual storytelling. Stalker by Tarkovsky has tons of dialogue and explanation of themes but i don't mind it, because Tarkovsky knows how to do visual storytelling and is able to put the viewer into certain trance. Ceylan especially in his later films has developed a style which latches too much on the words and screenplay, too little on the actual visual storytelling and the magic of visual based cinema.

>numbed our asses (and minds) with nothing but ass
These reviews are hilarious

Bloody Gooks constantly making kino.

Alright, I agree with you on Ceylan's screenplay length and on the relevance of visual storytelling, that's a valid criticism of Ceylan's work.

However in your original posts you were using criteria that simply doesn't work well with these films, and it probably prevents you from appreciating them fully I think.

I think you'll enjoy Kiarostami, check it//

How should one approach genre films, then? If not based on technique, abstraction and innovation, as the other guy seems to do it. Legitimately asking your opinion, not trying to put you on the spot, btw.

Hmm...
I cant understand.
Both It must be heaven and Parasite got 4.00
Parasite has more sample. Doesnt it should be Parasite?

Attached: FIPRESCI.png (966x736, 1M)

Sorry, I meant art films, not genre films!

Well i was just trying to say that Ceylan's last two films have been very text based. If you cut out all the dialogue from films by Angelopoulos, Tarr and Tarkovsky, you can watch them just like that like silent films, just with the music. Their images create certain atmosphere and emotions, they put you in the trance. That's what so powerful and unique about those three directors. Their command of visual storytelling and power of image which they are able to conjure. I think it's shame that Ceylan has become more text reliant especially since something like Once Upon a Time in Anatolia has some strong visual storytelling with some strong script moments. I just think he went more to the side of text and i would like to see him go back more into visual storytelling.

I'll check Kiarostami out. I have only seen Close-up by him and that was great.

What's your favourite Angelopoulos, Tarr and Tarkovsky btw?

itt film school faggots jerk each other off

This

I have zero idea how these fipresci prizes work but i'm happy for The Lighthouse.

Sooooo true.
Now, how about those dragons? :(

More like itt finally some discussion about film.

>The movie's raciest scenes, shot at the Dune nightclub, have been captured in a heavy and tense atmosphere, according to a witness of the shooting.
"The director had the actors play for hours and hours the nightclub scenes, exhausting them, and the shooting lasted until very late at night. Kechiche absolutely wanted a non simulated sex scene, something the actors didn't want to do. But by the way of insistance, and over time and with alcohol being recurringly consumed, he managed to get what he wanted."
According to this witness, this uneased the shooting team who witnessed this pressures coming from the director.
Based. Also, it's non-simulated.

what should I do?
I wanted to see Joon-ho kino and I wanted to end my life now.

should I wait? will that worth it?

Well it seems like Kechiche got actors drunk, actually shot real life sex between Ophelie Bau and her boyfriend, then used it in the film without their permission. That's why Ophelie left the theater and didn't go to press conference. Don't know if based or just an asshole.

>Don't know if based or just an asshole
Based

Trust me, I have a PhD on basedness

Well now if the actors refuse to do part 3 of his trilogy then he basically did this shit for nothing, he should have done it when filming the 3rd part not the 2nd part. I think it's a bit sleazy from him, he could have at least told the actors.

Bump

>somebody gave Mektoub a 4
Jesus, I didn't realize Fipresci judges were just as bad as all the other French critics

Film is an art form in its adolescence, any theories should be taken lightly, Tarkovsky's book is the main reference on the matter (imo), even if I slightly disagree on some parts.

The difference between Art and Entertainment doesn't always appear obvious, but it is: Intention.

A film is composed of several elements: first, second, third order elements and so on. Some of these elements are fundamental others dispensable. You shouldn't notice editing and time should be conserved, music is barely necessary, narration never. Matters of efficacy.

Genre films are compromised from the beginning, they serve a specific purpose and should be judged as such.

In genre you're supposed to notice all orders of elements, there's amusement to be found in editing and sound and so on while Art tries to get rid of all of the unnecessary elements as they aren't truthful and take away immersion.

The technical flaws the previous poster mentioned are second order, all classics have them to some extent. The editing is barely worth of mention in some of these films, Tarkovsky and some others worked with mosaics of time, that should give you an idea of how important it is in art.

Character arcs work in literature, sure, but in these films?
Time passes slowly as well but that's because you're literally watching a moment in time passing second by second.

Art films seek truth, Tarkovsky makes a parallel between Art and Science, one going for objective truth the other for subjective. In essence Art is always about the same thing, present reality filtered through our system of values.

In my opinion Art should be taken as a conversation then, you don't dislike it, you either agree or disagree, above all things you should try to understand the other view.

The obvious ones I guess.Players/Eternity; Satan/Werckmeister ( the first 10 min. of this film are worth more to me than the entire filmography of many, many "consecrated" filmmakers); Mirror/Rublev(?).

Seconded.

It should be a 5. At least he came closer than the others.

I recognize your autism in these threads every year (not an insult btw). Where do you post when Cannes ends?

>Film is an art form in its adolescence
Not during the silent era

So Parasite isn't as "Korean exclusive" as Bong originally claimed? I remember him saying that he didn't think non-Koreans would 'get it.'

Typical strategy for case if he doesnt get good reviews

Oh well...I barely begun to answer the question there's too much to say and no time right now.

Poetry for instance, how many filmmakers in the world are able to make it? Two or three in the entire history?

Rules change when judging art, you shouldn't criticize Picasso for not drawing close to reality, or Saramago for writing without punctuation.

Not if Korean critics don't like it either

>Cannes will be live streaming this year’s awards ceremony on its official YouTube and DailyMotion pages.

Why do journalists always say this. Year after year people in these threads get tricked into watching their YT channel only to find out they're NOT showing the ceremony. Does anybody have a link to a stream actually showing it?

Maybe some nuances within the film are exclusively Korean or more familiar to them but the overall film can be appreciated by anybody.

This

But Mektoub has T H I C C...

Attached: maxresdefault.jpg (1280x720, 96K)

Ahah you probably don't. There are a few people here and there writing things more interesting than many critics. Truefilm on Reddit had, in the beginning some really impressive stuff. I'm actually thinking of opening a place to discuss film in a more conservative way.

Oh c'mon. Interesting perspective but it still puts Film in its adolescence.

I kind of agree but i disagree with this.
>Character arcs work in literature, sure, but in these films?
Especially when talking about Ceylan since his films are quite focused on the characters and unraveling of their true nature. So i feel like criticizing that is not wrong. It's not transcendental filmmaking like Angelopoulos, Tarr and Tarkovsky. In Mirror you can't really criticize character arc or something like that.
Ophelie is cute.

Well Dardennes are there, i really hope they won't win anything major.

I don't think character arcs even exist for these filmmakers...let's take Winter Sleep as an example, when you say that Ceylan unravels the true nature of their characters I'm pretty sure we wouldn't agree on the main character being good or bad, where he's going from there, or if he really changed at all internally. There's maybe superficial unraveling.

In my first post I said that a certain criteria shouldn't be used when judging Art. I think people try to see this literary element in Film and end up only seeing a badly represented semblance of it.

Either way, I don't mean to impose, thanks for talking bruh.

No problem mate. It was nice talking to somebody who actually engages in conversation instead of calling the other person faggot.

Faggot

Do you really need to have a glass of piss in order to look "french"?

Thought screenplay would be Tarantino

Kek, likewise.

Now kiss.

>inniritu and yorgos on the panel
Yeah tarantula ain't winning shit

Viggo, holy fucking based. How many languages does he speak?

Why french sounds like drunken

Thank god. Kelly Reichardt may also dislike him since he called Meeks Cutoff one of the worst films of 2011.

Because Viggo is fucking drunk.

>presenter gets more time than winner

thank god for the audience shots, they also don't understand french.

>Dardennes winning anything
Why?

he's old, he's going to die soon.

>caring about an awards show for movies you haven't even seen yet

So fucking tarantino faggot won palm didn't he?
Stop fucking inviting hollywood people into jury.

i have nothing better to do

>Dardennes
Why

That's where you find the next kino to watch you uneducated pleb.

Social realism
Jesus, just not this.

This amerimutt is so out of touch

>Moore talks for 5 seconds
>"TRUMP"
wew

>dubbing du française
le terrible

If you need cannes to find kino then you are a mere kino peasant pretending to be a kino lord. We all see the manure on your shoes.

>Les Misarabs

Bong and Malick take the two awards left

>Les Misérables
Y I K E S

The palme dor is decided by the jury too though, no? Seems redundant to have a special jury prize. How many participation trophies are they giving out herr

Malick ain't winning shit

TRUMP IS A LIE

HAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAAHAHA

WHO IS THIS FAT BASTARD?

I doubt that Malick wins anything unfortunately.

Both have already won the Palme. My bet is for Almodóvar

it's me

Elle looks beautiful.

>I thank my family, i won't name everyone because we're a lot
Yeah no shit.

1st place is palme dor
2nd place is grand prize
3rd place is jury prize

It's unconventional, backwards, and stupid, much like the movies winning the awards

huehuehuehuehuehuehue

was it rapes?

>Grand prize
Meant Grand prix

>French
Literally the most homosexual language in the world.

i loathe mexican directors.

I don't get it - is this the end?

What ethnicity is this even? The French are so mixed I can't tell if she's from France, Middle East, Africa or India.

Femme Fatale, also some of his work with Almodovar

>Nothing for Tarantino
TOP
FUCKING
LEL

>You shouldn't notice editing

Read about opacity and transparency in film.

>Music is barely necessary

Even when Bresson wrote that he still used music in his films, there's no such thing as that.

>Narration never.

Watch La Casa Lobo, unreliable narrator changing the story's shape. Btw, narration is completely necessary for some film-essays.

Who cares

RICED

Nope. Palme dor left

She is from Senegal i think. Not sure.

>Diop was born in Paris, France. Diop is a member of the prominent Senegalese Diop family.

isn't this whole movie just race mixing propaganda?

what prize is it now?

please play her the music

When is Japan going to win in cannes!?

is this the same family the diop who started the we wuz egyptians kangz meme came from

Kechiche doesn't give a shit about race mixing, he just likes filming women's asses.

It literally won last year

GROPE HER, STALLONE

He is just trolling

JUST GIVE THE PALME TO MY MAN KECHICHE AND BE DONE IT

>Basterds music

Agreed, films this year look so good why did they waste an award on those hacks?

So, which Asian country will win the Palme next year?

Memories of Murder
Mother
Barking Dogs Never Bite
Sea Fog
Okja
Snowpiercer
Antarctic Journal

will we witness the first academy's nomination for a south korean film or will they still ignore south korean films like they always did?

Canada

Now it's his turn

Attached: Lav_Diaz_at_On_the_Edge_Film_Festival_2015_August_5_(cropped).jpg (220x335, 17K)

i watched it this afternoon, it's very kino

God /pol/ happenings were the greatest things to ever happen on this website through 2014

Pinoy will win

Bong's daughter is so cute...

They will never put him in competition if he keeps up those runtimes.

>TARANTINO

OH NONONONONONO LOOK AT THIS DOOD

I hope so.
But they constantly have ignored Korea film

Last year:
1. "Burning (Beoning)" (Lee Chang-dong) FIPRESCI Prize, ICS Award [8.12/272 1.3]
2. "Shoplifters (Manbiki kazoku)" (Hirekazu Kore-eda) Palme d'Or [7.73/184 1.3]

This year:
1. "Parasite (Gisaengchung)" (Bong Joon-ho) Palme d'Or [8.69/347 1.2]
2. "Pain & Glory (Dolor y gloria)" (Pedro Almodovar) Best Actor [8.36/254 1.3]
3. "Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Portrait de la jeune fille en feu)" (Céline Sciamma) Best Screenplay, Queer Palm [7.88/281 1.8]

Whitoids destroyed.

Is Memories of Murder kino?

It's unironically in the top 10 of the last decade.

It is actual, pure kino.

hahahahahaahahaahahahaahahahaHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAAHAH.........

>critics
Untrustworthy bunch in general

Too much. Top 50

Full list of winners

Attached: cannes19winners.jpg (1847x774, 315K)

I've only seen that one, Snowpiercer, and Okja, but Memories of Murder was MUCH better.

Reminder that this is the only relevent south korean director

Attached: w10.jpg (625x417, 44K)

Asian rule

Korean woody allen

Are you serious? Most Korean Kino lives up to the hype, and this is easily one of their top films of all time.

>be tarantula
>your film is released the same day as Parasite
>expect easy win
>Parasite actually overshadows your film
>got nothing
>Bong wins Palm d'or
BASED

Are Snowpiecer & Okja good? I've watched Bong's other stuff.

>Le 7/10 man

>korean Allen
He wishes

I don't like his Camera memework. It was fun for the first two films. He needs to make a serious film.

More like korean Rohmer

Snowpiercer would be fine if the setting/metaphor weren't pants on head retarded

I don't think Tarantino is stupid enough to think he would've won anything here.

Tarantino won't even get a BP nomination

Attached: 13952120-7070451-image-m-113_1558805259604.jpg (962x1437, 185K)

I thought they might give him something just to suck his dick a little for bringing all kinds of attention and Hollywood glamour to the show this year.

his 10th movie will be about Cannes.
screencap this post.

I think it's going to work out the other way around to be honest with the Oscars thanking him.

Who will play Adum?

himself, duh

ehhh, sorry I meant tarantino here

Does anyone have a link to a none-french-dubbed version of the awards?

Tarantino won Palm Dog Award, an award for the best dog performance.

>Pitbull Brandy, who plays Brad Pitt’s character Cliff Booth’s pup in the film (and reportedly has a very juicy role in the final act) joins a long line of distinguished Palm Dog winners, including Uggie from the Oscar-winning “The Artist” and Ken Loach for casting three-legged dog Shae in his Palme d’Or-winning “I, Daniel Blake” three years ago. While Brandy was not on hand (or paw) to accept the award today, Tarantino was, and the filmmaker giddily trotted out a doggy stand-in to savor the moment of finally winning his first Palm Dog.

How can Bong even compete?

DOG OF THE WEEK
