Everyone knows T1 was a slasher film, right down to how the film was marketed, you're clearly just a kid who's perceptions have been changed by how T2 turned the franchise into an action adventure type film with only a few of the original slasher elements re-incorporated.

This is the problem with the franchise itself.
It's explained in the first movie that the resistance was attacking skynet and it only had time to send back one terminator, and since they accidentally all the records in judgement day all they knew is that John Connor's mom lived in LA in the 80's, and it turns out skynet ensures its own destruction thanks to a causal loop.
Once you start adding more and more sequels the premise starts to wear pretty fucking thin until you get to something like genesys, where you've got to wonder how retarded skynet must be when a t-800 can make a time machine out of car parts, and the only plan it can come up with is to just keep sending back terminators to kill Sarah Connor.
It deflates the apocalyptic killer AI when you realize you could beat it 9 times out of 10 in tic-tac-toe, even if you let skynet move first.

Firstly, it's a definitive sci-fi movie. Second, it contains far more than minor slasher elements. The entire plot is the seemingly invincible monster chasing the girl, there's little else to it beyond the sci-fi elements.

T2 is an action movie. There's a difference.

It is good, but mixed bag for Terminator fans. It goes into slightly different direction. Philosophical one that panders on nature of AI. Can AI love? Can AI learn ethics? Also it got cancelled when it really got deeper into that kind of stuff. Some people had issues with John being a fairly normal teenager instead of messiah that will lead mankind to victory at the star of show, not understanding that his growth would be the main story of the show. Another thing that was issue with many terminator fans was time traveling into the future, without realizing how much more expensive it would have been filming a show that would happen 15 years ago. It is seriously more expensive and harder than making show set today or even 30 or 40 years ago.
The better question is following: Did the terminator fall in love with teenager? What the fuck Cameron is in first place? Re-programmed terminator or maybe even Skynet itself?

McG was relatively inexperienced director who didn't have enough professional clout to say no to producers or even stars of his movie. Almost everything he did prior to Salvation was just music videos. He is pretty much definition of director that will do what boss says.

Make it two part film, trilogy or miniseries from the start. Have someone whose last name isn't Connor or Reese as point view character. At the start have it as pure horror thing with main character running away from the machines. Introduce John Connor and/or Kyle Reese at some point around half way through the story, but still keep them distant for most parts.

Well Kyle wouldn't have known what happened after he left or that the T-1000 had been sent. Presumably he would have been told they were going to blow up the time machine after he went, and THEN Connor sent the other T-800 to follow the T-1000. Skynet would have sent the first Terminator and then T-1000 in succession, before the humans captured the time machine.
You'd also have to presume everything after T2 is canon and not just retcons to make more money. T2 was supposed to be the end, therefore I consider the other movies to be non-canon.

Kyle was always born in 2003, Judgement Day just got pushed back so he was alive before the war.

Definitely one of the highlights of the show. Along with John realizing that future people are trying to manipulate him and getting disappointed with humanity due to that.

The possibility that much younger John Connor goes back to the future (kek) to become the John Connor that saves humanity is also intriguing. Show certainly hinted about future people coming from different timelines, the torture episode hints toward that possibility.

The thing hinted in novelization of T2 is that Skynet send back both T-800 and T-1000 rapidly between losing it all and the resistance capturing the time displacement equipment At two different times. After that John sent Kyle and reprogrammed T-800 to fight terminators at those dates Skynet targeted. That hints that timeline remains unaltered until something changing the timeline happens or we are spinning into infinite multiverses where changing the history doesn't really matter in this reality.

Probably a point in time where really had to think about it.
