What are some genuinely good horror flicks? I'm talking about movies with fairly believable stories and characters. I feel like The Descent is a great example of realism in horror. The characters aren't fucking retarded, and they establish a set of ground rules with the monsters (no sudden teleporting, random metaphysical powers, etc). The Shining would probably be the ultimate example here, but you don't have to go that far. You can if you want though

Yeah but the horror in both of those movies, especially The Descent, is obviously not literal. There are no actual monsters or ghosts with faggot ground rules as you call them. They are metaphors for internal struggles the characters are having. The best horror movies are like that, literal stories with dream logic/metaphor stuff, because there's no such thing as ghosts or troglodytes or faggot shit like that. If you read them literally you are genuinely mentally handicapped
that was never confirmed for The Descent.
Bingo
What comes to mind
The Babadook
Hereditary
The Wailing
The Witch
There are good movies that are just stories without much of a deeper meaning that are still good
Sinister
The conjouring
The host
Saw
then the tongue in cheek
Evil Dead
Cabin in the Woods
All are good
Directors cut ending for sure you fucking retard, kys brainlet. Also no surface level movie, especially horror, is worth a fuck anyway. Needs to mean something or it is absolute garage.
good british horror flick and I like neil marshall, shame his hellboy film didn't do well. dog soldiers was good
>Descent
>Good
lel.
Try the exorcism of Emily Rose or Silent Hill if you want a modern horror good one.
no you fucking pretentious pseud the director said it himself. it's supposed to be left ambiguous. god you're a cunt
Silent Hill is on par with The Descent though, as in they're both above average horror flicks. Haven't seen Emily Rose.
>Haven't seen Emily Rose
Watch it, imho is our generation equivalent of The Exorcist for our parents.
Hush
>The host
>horror
cringe
Good shout, kino
>Silent Hill
it's shit, Yea Forumsirgin
If you fancy some chav horror and want to be pissed off too, then Eden Lake was alright.
It's the only modern videogame adaptation who actually cares about the videogame plot/atmosphere, and its a good horror movie per se.
Did the idea of a serial killer that's an insecure manlet hit a little bit too close to home, user?
What’s the consensus on the Hostel movies? Was disgusted as a kid but I have the stomach for it now if it’s got a decent plot.
Check out the Creep movies and Green Room OP.
babadook was absolute garbage tier
Torture porn mostly. The only thing the plot does is get you to the next torture scene.
Bone Tomahawk
The first Hostel is a masterpiece of exploitation cinema. The second is a terrible movie that could have been great, and the first is a direct-to-tv movie with one surprisingly great character.
Kill List
emily rose was really well done, evokes true fear and suspense rather than just going for boo scares.
pic related is a so so horror movie found footage whatever, but it's much better if you've read dante's inferno, as the movie plays on making a ton of very specific references to things found in the book. if you havent read dante's inferno though, it will be a waste of your time and will seem like a very average to subpar found footage horror film
came here to post this
>I feel like The Descent is a great example of realism in horror. The characters aren't fucking retarded
>all characters are female
DOOOK
DOOOOOK
DOOOOOOOOK
The cottage (2008) is pretty decent, it's a weird horror/thriller with comedy elements but it's well acted with andy serkis kino, it kind of falls apart towards the end when the horror elements come into it but the first half fantastic imo.
Very enjoyable but the "horror" aspects are completely overstated
I prefer horror when it comes out of left field. A sudden "genre switch" makes shit scarier, that's what makes it enjoyable. A great example is the night drive scenes in Nocturnal Animals.
Silent Hill is good by video-game-movie standards, but it's a mess compared to The Descent.
Not sure if it really hits all of your criteria, but Pandorum is a kino horror that's pretty underappreciated
I like the Decent, but everything you said about is wrong, pretty impressive.
>horror
>good
pick one
even pseud's like you enjoy shit like Nosferatu
Hey guys, it's your friend OP here. Thanks for all the great suggestions and replies. I have another question.
Are there any horror movies about a silent transgender serial killer? I can't for the life of me remember where, but I was reading about some guy who went crazy and was spotted dressed as a woman who pretended to be mute in another country. I imagined one of those things where you don't really notice it's a guy at first, making it super creepy. Is there anything like this in film? Would be really good for a horror film.
I just noticed this post after typing all that out. Looks like someone else ITT had the same idea
Martyrs
>a silent transgender serial killer?
Silence of the Lambs came close, but Bill needed his victims to PUT THE FUCKING LOTION BACK IN THE BAAAASKET.
Watch Let The Right One In.
In the Mouth of Madness
Don't know about any movie, but try reading The Wasp Factory.
looks rad. been looking for a good werewolf flick
>try reading The Wasp Factory
That's a comedy.
>Let The Right One In
looks kinda creepy. but a girl in disguise as a boy doesn't have nearly as much scare potential as a man in disguise as a woman. I assume it's the neighbor boy, considering he's played by a girl. don't spoil it for me though. i'll remember this one for tonight.
t. deserves death for being retarded and not realizing what the death of the author is especially in light of marshall's faggot shit post-centurion
Smart person and horror fan here, original Nosferatu sucks compared to other Murnau stuff at the time such as Faust. It's trash beyond the visuals and filming techniques because Dracula is a terrible story with no artistic value. Herzog's 19179 remake is far superior.
try ginger snaps and its sequels, and also late phases. sucks there are hardly any good werewolf movies given it's the best monster but w/e
The Howling is a must watch that everyone forgets about.
Rec (2007)
>Herzog's 19179 remake is far superior.
Herzog's remake features modern steel railings in the mountain scenes as well as a lengthy expositional shot where half the screen is entirely taken up by a horse's ass. Even Kinski couldn't save that dumpster fire.
>that everyone forgets about
That's because it is forgettable
I really enjoyed the VVITCH and they come at night
My all time favorites are where dead go die and where black birds fly
Basado y horror pastillado
>surface level movie
All cinema is surface level spectacle, nothing wrong with a bit of fun now and then
If you want layers and deeper meanings open a book and stop pretending you find deep meaning on monster gory movies you pseud
The Dawn of the Dead ('78) and the ('04) Director's Cut had some believable characters and the latter some nice horror pieces with enough immersion
The Dead and Dead Set (show) had their moments too
>Dead Set (show)
Glad to see it mentioned, it's one of the all time great pieces of zombie media but it's fucking underrated.
Quads of truth. I've only seen the first Hostel, and the only thing it does well is set up the protagonist to hilariously fuck up the bad guys at the end.
I'll watch it, thanks. Dante's Divina Commedia is mandatory in school here in Italy.
I've not seen the movie but the book is creepy as all fuck, and a good read.
The first two are very enjoyable torture porn comedies. The third is trash.
