The Nazi Salute was based on the Bellamy Salute, which was an American invention and was based on the (incorrect) Renaissance paintings of the French who painted Romans doing that salute. When, actually, the Romans salute was slightly to the side and not straight forward, if they ever saluted at all. The Americans, being the Romaboos they are, thought this was legit and did it for the Bellamy Salute. The Germans then copied this and made it their thing.
