Is that flooded tunnel those guys go into in the second episode the same tunnel you have to fight all the Monolith in at the end of Stalker?

Also has anyone made a "Guards this woman has lost her composure" edit for Dyatlov?

Yeah but be prepared to cringe at SJW shit and blatant historical inaccuracies. It’s a good time waster. And if you don’t fall for the fanboyism you can get some fun times in these threads.

Go for it. Ukraine is dirt cheap, the people are friendly, and despite what you may think Chernobyl is not that overrun yet. Meh. It suffers from modern western sensibilities and strays to far from the more crazy and real Soviet ways of the day. The best way I could describe it is that it's like that recent Stalin movie but with more serious tones. And for some reason, they replaced a large group of scientists that worked as advisors with one female that is smarter than everyone.

>Wait, are those uranium rods?
no, the uranium is not in big sticks like that. the fuel rods are actually an assembly of multiple rods and clad in zircon, those are likely pressure tubes with sections of the graphite stack. the majority of the actual fuel melted into the basement.

Some form of nepotism. Creators decide to force her in that role, taking out the large team of mostly male scientists, because they favor superior women characters that make men look stupid. Though for this type of thing, it's dumb fairly subtle by still keeping the males likeable and seemingly superior in their own niches. But this is more to do with straddling the line due to the rise in right wing thinkers in recent times.

>Mazin ends with a potentially clever device: using testimony at the show trial of the plant’s supervisors as a way to circle back and finally recount the story’s beginning, the botched safety test that led to the explosion. But the scene doesn’t have the force it should, because like much of what has come before, it takes fictional license over the line into contrivance and melodrama.

>Looking for a tragic hero to center the story on, Mazin has chosen the nuclear physicist Valery Legasov (Jared Harris), in part, perhaps, because his experience with Chernobyl drove him to suicide. >Legasov recanted before his death, in interviews made possible by the rapid progress of Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika. In “Chernobyl,” however, Mazin puts Legasov on the witness stand at the trial and, in a stroke of pure fantasy, has him boldly denounce Soviet corner-cutting and secrecy, after which he’s hauled into a back room by the K.G.B.

Wouldn't that all be encased in the sarcophagus part? Or can anyone get in there?

Scenes that add fake melodrama but ultimately do nothing to alter the progression of the real-life story... in a docuDRAMA? Wtf I thought this was a documentary!!

It's a pointless addition though. They lessened her superiority a bit compared to what most modern shows are doing with their female characters, but they still forced her in regardless. Ya the show still has many good qualities but yet the song still remains the same.

Yup. You can even detect the radiation with some canned air, rubbing alcohol, and a bright light.

Quick question.
What kind of factory or installation produces those fuel rods and how shielded is that?

need a ricardo one

for what purpose?

>ultimately do nothing to alter the progression of the real-life story.

possible causes of failure:
>operator error
>Soviet reactor design
>Soviet corner-cutting and secrecy

>as of December 2017 there were still 11 RBMK reactors, and four small EGP-6 graphite moderated light water reactors operating in Russia

hmmmm i wonder if they could be conveniently leaving anything majorly important out

i love how half of Yea Forums turned into tenured nuclear physicists overnight.

Attached: FOOD REVIEW.jpg (280x396, 63K)

There are videos on YT of people getting into it. I think its before 2016 tho.

The guy was fascinated with chemistry, especially radioactive stuff, and he supposedly wanted to build a breeder reactor.

Funnily enough he didn't die of ARS or cancer but of a fentanyl overdose.

Wrinkles look fine on men; diagonal ones under the eyes can make you look distinguished. All men's hairlines change starting around 20, balding or not. As for the back... I don't take especially good care of myself.

Fuck I'm old lol!

Yes. I distinctly remember the old smoke alarm in my parents' house when I was a little kid having the radiation symbol. In fact, I think even my old smoke alarm had it as well. Presumably that's the reason those things have an expiration date, because half-life renders the materials that allow them to function...well, non-functional, and that's why I started hearing the stupid "low battery" beep even though I'd just put in a brand new one.

My new one uses some sort of optical mechanism instead.

Attached: BRUHTGENS3.png (1024x589, 686K)

The finale blames Soviet corner-cutting and secrecy where the main character in real life testified it was operator error and recanted later saying it was the design.

What is left out is that the design flaw was widely known and not ignored by some kind of incompetence or left unfixed by bureaucratic lethargy but intentionally exploited as political leverage.

A boy scout dying of a fentanyl overdose sounds so incongruous it made me laugh

How do you know what's been left out?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Nuclear_fuel_companies

>What is left out is that the design flaw was widely known and not ignored by some kind of incompetence or left unfixed by bureaucratic lethargy but intentionally exploited as political leverage.
I think it's in the Zero Hour episode where they explain KGB was aware of the problems but their advice was ignored, and the construction committee of the reactor glossed over several safety standards in order to get it built faster and entitle them to substantial bonuses. I think they determined that the safety issues wouldn't pose a problem as long as the reactor staff knew what they were doing, but I guess none of them were prepared for Dyatlov.

you dont need to be a physicist to identify parts of a an exploded reactor when its all been so well documented with thousand of annotated images, tv shows, movies, and expansive explanation. you only have to be interested in it.

Attached: 16f731ad79b4c4006d67241fad71c1a9.jpg (738x1107, 132K)

>widely known
Only by people who worked beforehand at the reactors where accidents happened, or people high up enough that they weren't going to talk about it like Fomin.

Dyatlov didn't know what he was doing since he wasn't informed about the flaws of RBMK. I doubt even he would order so many control rods to be taken out if he knew about the graphite tips.

I'm not tenured, I'm just an assistant professor.

Guaranteed hot and fresh.
Go on, have a taste!

Attached: 1558410244512.jpg (960x651, 107K)

there's also the story where people knew of the flaws but were okay with it because the reactor would have never been operated outside of so many safety protocols as well as the operators disabling so many things to run the test which should have never been disabled in the first place.

you mean disinfectant?

These threads also gave chernobyl obsessive autists like me a place to flex our years of autism

That, and he ignored the guidelines for the test and tried to have it started at 200MW, instead of the specified 700.

don't you feel that it's a bit patronizing though considering how mediocre everyone's take is on it

One of the most horrific facts I learned when I was doing research on Chernobyl for a project was that of the 124 ARS victims (only 26 died of ARS, one died instantly in the explosion, body never recovered another died due to injuries sustained in the explosion and not ARS), 8 ARS victims had recieved doses of between 400-500 Gy (grays - equivalent absorbed dose iirc).

10Gy is enough to kill a person (5Gy is like LD50, I think it's a little higher than that)

Friends are like a bullet in your heart. Even after 50000 years, our warm memories won't stop firing.

Is this show worth a shit and actually entertaining or is it just a dry recounting the events of the Chernobyl disaster?

This user is correct.

They were clearly pressured from above. I don't mean exploited the building of the reactor but the explosion. Maybe whoever ordered they thought they could damage the building enough to get it shut down, and didn't think using the known fault would blow the core. Maybe the didn't think it would be a big deal if it did because they weren't a nuclear scientist. Maybe it was a bureaucrat in Kiev, someone connected to a competing industry, like coal for example. Maybe someone had it out for Chernobyl because they lost a competing bid for something in Siberia because Moscow thought Ukraine was more important. Maybe someone didn't like Ukraine having to answer to Moscow and realized a power plant of that size tied them together in a rather permanent fashion.

This is what I'm talking about. None of this is addressed because it is assumed that Soviet boogeyman fucked it up through individual incompetence so none of it was investigated by the makers of this documentary. This is clearly soft propaganda towards the current international political stage trying to dig up old Red Scare garbage and put a nice face on it.

So handsome!

not who you're responding to but i'm just interested in radioactivity and nuclear physics so chernobyl is obviously related. plus it's just cool.

I read all the reviews I can find over the last month none of them mention any of this, we are three episodes in and there is no speculation on it, and the narrative so far definitely isn't going in this direction at all. All the interviews with the cast and directors constantly talk about how the documentary is about lies driven from fear of the KGB and how anyone would have done what they did under pressure from le evul soviets

And you really think your truther shit about some Ukrop politician or mogul intentionally sabotaging Chernobyl is somehow more believeable?

i tried episode 1, are all episodes that boring?

Wait until you're old enough to buy cigarettes and come back then. This show may be too mature for you.

Various stuntmen. Have him be masked throughout the entire series and never say a word. If Strelok's internal thoughts are necessary, have him write in a journal and use a voice actor to express his thoughts but change the voice actor on a regular basis. This anonymity is symbolic of Strelok not knowing who he himself is, as well as the fact that he is the audience's eyes and ears in the zone and thus he in a sense speaks and stands in for everyone.

>a woman
A fictional woman. Fictional characters have no place in a show about real events.

You mean like the head miner?

WHAT? A F*EMOID? IN MY SHOW? RREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE *SEETHES* *SEETHES LOUDLY* REREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I disagree with the dude you're replying to, but that miner was real, comrade.

Nope. Just balding like my dad and his dad before him

>there is UNDOUBTEDLY several fully fueled reactors at the bottom of the ocean (either from nuclear subs or crashed secret airborne/space reactors)

She’s not “smarter than everyone”, she corrected the professor once and when she tries to correct him again he had already beaten her to it.

>embellishing personality traits is TOTALLY the same as making up a completely fictional character
What they should have done is used the separate women they based the fictional character on individually, and not tried to make a singular 'strong female character' that did the work of three real women. Why be dishonest? Why not tell the real story of the real women?

He was probably fairly cheeky, considering the respect miners were due back then. But most of the conversations like that are fictitious. They have to be. While I don't mind Emily Watson's character, I'm not entirely convinced they needed to invent a whole person to get their point across.

I grew up next to a nuclear plant meaning I was exposed to a ton of fearmongering and anti nuclear propaganda. It convinced me to learn everything I could about nuclear power, which inevitably led to me learning about Chernobyl, which overlapped with my other interest in huge disasters and failures with interesting technical details.
It's like it was meant to be.

Probably because they didn't have uninformed workers preforming retarded tests on them. After Chernobyl the other reactors were also modified with many safety features.

>Why not tell the real story of the real women
Because you can only stretch this story across a handful of episodes and the men are too interesting to sacrifice their screentime for multiple minor female characters. .

Is this from the next episode?

Having so many characters would get messy.

>probably

There were women doing shit, they just combined them into one character.

let me just...

Episode 2, during the evacuation montage.

>Super smart woman who SAVES THE WORLD from the dumb boyim who didn't think of the corium melting into the water reservoir like her because she's so smart
>That nurse who knows how to treat radiation burns unlike that dumb doctor she works for
come on now you have to admit this shit is cringe

Oh yeah then I found out about duga which overlapped with my interest in radio, radar, and cold war stuff.
Chernobyl is the coolest place on the planet and it's a shame that it's been completely looted by now.

Would you have cringed less if it were a male nurse showing up the doctor?

coitus
acquire it

>they just combined them into one character
That's dishonest. None of her interactions with Legasov actually happened irl. Yes, she takes on the role of multiple women, but that includes a woman who is 100% OC donut steel.

have sex

That would be pure kino. He hardly needs to speak anyway, most of Stalker the film was silent so it could work well.

Other daily reminder:
Oceans are really fucking big and there's a huge amount of dissolved shit in them. How much dissolved shit? Well, most of the gold on Earth is dissolved in the fucking oceans; and trying to get it out would be hilariously uneconomical and inefficient.

Another daily reminder:
Exposure to 'dangerous radioactivity' can include eating bananas, commercial air travel, standing next to brick walls, using a cell phone, standing near wifi routers, and standing near smoke detectors.

Radiation is not some super deadly anti-life particle, it's just energy that RADIATES from a single source. And it can be dangerous because guess what DNA is really fucking fragile. But the good news is that your body's immune system knows DNA is fragile and is constantly on the hunt for proto-cancers and grossly mutated cells. Sometimes the immune system loses that battle, but more often than not it wins. If it didn't, you'd die of cancer before you reached puberty.

I thought under communism women had elevated roles?

I have, now what?

>didn't think of the corium melting into the water reservoir
He would have thought of it, but he was led astray by his superiors. It's a bit far-fetched that she would discover the lie with such impeccable timing, but nothing about it indicates she's smarter than Legasov.

>come look at me user

Most of those reactors are under 5000+ feet of water.

>That nurse who knows how to treat radiation burns unlike that dumb doctor she works for
The point of that exchange was to illustrate how nobody thought the reactor exploded or could explode, not to flex feminism on people.

It wouldn't have happened, there is no fucking point to having a scene where some random nurse shows up a doctor who doesn't even know why they might need iodine pills despite being close to a nuclear power plant other than giving women on-screen competence at the expense of male characters

Pure propaganda. In collectivist societies, the role of women devolves back to baby factories. State needs more workers and soldiers, and doesn't need some whiny feminist complaining she isn't paid as much as her male counterparts.
That being said, when the State sees competence or needs more bodies than it has penises, then yes collectivism will ignore gender and gladly send women to their deaths in poorly made mass produced tanks and BRRRRRT Il-2's.

In some ways, but they could never achieve the highest status that men could. This is reflected in the show.

I watched a mini doc on chernobyl and it was pretty sad. Everyone that lives in the replacement city 50km away wants to keep working at chernobyl.
They loved living in Pripyat and working at the plant. It was a thing of pride for them

Then maybe the story of those women isn't that important.

nuclear energy and weapons need to fuck off already.
how can this shit be even remotely a good idea...

god knows how much nuclear waste got flushed into the ocean, or thrown on the roadside by america in the 1940s, or shithole nations like pakistan or iran.

the problem was so bad at hanford in the 1940s/50s, that plutonium dust was actually collecting in the vents and piling up to the point it would go supercritical.

fucking hell... chernobyl is NOTHING, a drop in the bucket.

Attached: 58559795679468.jpg (518x551, 38K)

Right, it was stupid. But that's beside the point, do you have more of a problem because it was a woman questioning the doctor?

It wasn't about that. It was a young/old thing

This is some insanely pedantic shit. Who cares if the number of people and names of the characters is the reduced for screen time.

idk how this could possibly make you mad when there are so many factual inaccuracies you could point at that actually matter

That's why the scene was made at all

oh and keep making excuses for women fellas, I'm sure one day they'll catch up and stop sucking. Every time you tell me to have sex a woman becomes a CEO.

Mods will ban you for it.

>a singular 'strong female character'
that gets utterly destroyed in one episode and has to have a man come to her rescue.

Everything is relative. When Soviets took Sakhalin and Kurils in 1945, many Japanese women pleaded to stay in USSR because they were astonished by the fact that woman could actually have any role in the society, do work that matters etc. However bad Soviet society was, the Japanese were shocked there was a society where they could me something other than human cattle.

Certainly, but what woman would be content to watch a show where the only female MC is portrayed as willfully ignorant, and is doomed to a terrible fate without any consolation? The director/writer may have liberal ideas in mind, but the main agenda here is money.

I was just playing tetris, based.

Seriously? This is where Soviet incompetence starts to seem overemphasized to me. Putting milk on a burn is such a terrible idea; I can't believe it.

weapons yes, energy and mediione no. be thankful you live in a timeframe where there's enough medical isotopes to diagnose medical issues properly instead of getting just draining your blood and or sawing off a limb and hoping for the best. also coal power and electric battery production are some of the most filthiest and most toxin producing things in history that fuck people up.

This is precisely the case and the person you're talking to would have stood up and clapped if the genders had been swapped.

>They loved living in Pripyat and working at the plant. It was a thing of pride for them
of course it was because they had luxuries far beyond what everyone else had; education, entertainment, food, heat, a job, etc. however that's also why nobody said anything because they didn't want to lose their position.

well yeah but I mean did they actually ban someone for it? its been posted shitloads

>no user! i have to go back into the reactor. i'm hurting you!!! someday...someday maybe we can be together. until then i'll be waiting in the core...

the problem is when every shithole wants their own reactors and nukes and full time plutonium production..

do you think north korea and syria are disposing of their nuclear waste safely and not just dumping it in the ocean?

not really an argument. Nobody disagrees that the USSR was exploiting labor and everything and weirdly contradictory in it's stance on women. But are you arguing that women, compared to the west, weren't WAY more involved in industry WAY earlier that "the west?"

The had WW2 sniper women that they LOVED to parade around. They were fucking communists. That they still lapsed into cronyism and corruption is pretty irrelevant.

More like a medical office would have to be cleaned up by personnel who know how to handle radionuclides.

He passed by leaps and bounds post of deputy chief engineer for installation and operation and soon replaced Plohiya as chief engineer. It should be noted here that the USSR Ministry of Energy did not support Fomin’s candidacy . This post was proposed by V. K. Bronnikov, an experienced reactor man. But Bronnikov was not approved in Kiev , calling him an ordinary techie. Mol-de, Fomin is a tough, demanding leader. We want him. And Moscow lost.
