A vape with 0mg juice sounds like the key here. They go out, you go out. Take a few tugs on it while they smoke and then go back in with them. You get the feeling of smoking with them, but not the nicotine so your body doesn't start to need it. The trouble with joining smokers would be that you feel a need to fit in with them, which would lead to you smoking too. If you can participate with an analog that isn't as harmful, you can hang with them and get the experience without endangering yourself as much. As a smoker, I think smoking is a really social activity too, so being able to take a part in it while also not really taking part in it competes the experience.

I mean, I totally get it. I think nicotine addiction is nearly as much psychological as it is a physical addiction to the chemical. Being able to take a break from a task every hour or two and just being able to get away and let your mind wander, talk about other shit, relax, whatever. That process in itself is addicting. Once you've conditioned your mind to expect a break like that every hour or so, it's hard to break it. And if you took away a smoker's cigs, what is he really doing? He's relaxing and taking deep breaths for a couple minutes. Shit like boxed breathing is supposed to help calm and focus the mind. It all plays into the mental part of nicotine addiction, rewards for X amount of time worked. We really like rewards for work, I think we're conditioned to seek it out. Smoking is just a way of dealing with that.
