The mystery of the Others, their apparent unstoppability, and the fact that George isn't afraid to write a bleak ending is what drew me into this story. To find out they're just First Men with daggers in them, and that they aren't even the main conflict of the story, i.e. they're quickly resolved with to make way for Jon killing Dany, and Bran becoming king, has killed every iota of interest I had in the universe.

What George has written here is just a less compelling, and less satisfying LotR, instead of being a fresh take on the genre. There was no reason to stretch it over 7 books spanning 8000 pages when the same story could've been told, probably better, in 3 medium sized books.

King Bran is confirmed, which negates any hope of the Others leaving a lasting impact on the world, let alone winning in any capacity.

It doesn't matter how much time, how many books or seasons it takes to tell the story, it's a failure as a core concept of the main plot outlines. To resolve the mystery at all (completely unnecessary for a good story) is a big minus, but to resolve it in such an anti-climactic fashion destroys the apparent premise and hook of the whole thing.

I don't mind him not finishing the books, I just wish the show didn't spoil the ending so I'd never know how disappointing it is. A show-original ending would've had zero drawbacks.

You make a good point but you also have to factor in how long he has been working on this series. To not have it finished by the time the show finished is just unacceptable. From what I remember George also said that one is the closest to what he imagined, but I agree that the face is not what I'd call "beautiful". I would also never depict them as angry as I think it makes them less intimidating. Armor is spot on and would've been kino paired with their language that sounds like ice cracking.

I think user's point is that ASOIAF has bloated itself beyond the point of necessity. There's so many subplots which could be conducted offscreen or even eliminated outright, but George wants to unroll them in full view of the reader. Everything going on with Dorne and Quentyn is the perfect example of this. If we need Dorne to line up with fAegon, is there really any reason this couldn't happen offscreen? Similarly, if we needed Dany to reject a political marriage in favor of her pursuit of Daario, this could easily have been conducted through raven. Instead we end up spending X amount of POV chapters on it, and further complicating Dany's already insanely sprawling Essos plotline, which is holding the overall narrative back more than anything else.

Just a tip for you: Mod becomes really really fucking boring after all the canon characters die out and you're left with idiots who despite being tutored by greats like Tywin or Varys or who have you, they end up with abominable stats.
