I read it more of a fear of immigrants up until the Others got explained, then I was truly lost because it seemed partially against the government for abandoning the Others (or having a closed borders policy) while also showing that they would get in and wreak havoc. It also finally blurs everything more with the final tweest which really doesn't fit into my earlier interpretation without some weird mental gymnastics and a reversal of who is being criticised in the allegory, even though the Others are clearly bad. And the pieces of 1980s Americana were so damn abstract and their relevance was so dumb.

I watched it in the cinema with a friend and we agreed that it barely made sense but had some cool early spooks.

What is explained doesn't even fit the movie properly though does it? Or did I misinterpret that information dump?

I interpreted it as being about immigration because of the whole idea of being replaced - "they take our jobs" etc - and I really think that's what Peele was trying to convey with the whole family being there and the "we are Americans" line (which ruined the scene to deliver the message) as a statement about attempted assimilation. I'm Australian and it made me think of the Asians here who drink VB and call me "mate" in a thick non-Aussie accent and how it's strange having someone awkwardly aping your culture (inb4 Australian "culture") to fit in. That's also connected to how the Other boy will copy the main boy's movements as well.
