His good decisions come from a genuine desire to uphold what he sees as his responsibility, while his bad decisions come from being bitter about not getting the love of the people he thinks he deserves (and not loving them back). It was a pretty interesting variation on the “entitled prince” type because the guy is working hard for the good of the kingdom, but treats popularity like a tax owed to him.
