Was the only thing this entire season that felt properly paced. You can't bum rush through Tyrion dealing with working for Hitler. Although, most of the younger female actresses with "strong" kick-ass mode dialed-up turned in cringy performances from time to time, despite not being bad actresses, strictly speaking. The Sand Sneks - and Spear Snek in particular - are notable for this. Sophie and Maisie had awful moments too in later seasons. this isn't correct. GRRM's plot expanded as he wrote it. he originally planned a trilogy but that doesn't mean it would have ended with the events in ASOS. IIRC the first book ended with the Red Wedding or something, and each novel focused on a different area (KL, north of the Wall, Essos).

After it sinks-in how obvious it is that the show didn't end - it just "reached a stopping point" - you're open to the question of why didn't they stop it sooner. And I think that's what D&D probably realized and may have argued. They would have done the math and realized they were never going to do the book ending justice and several of the character transformations just weren't going to ring true (like Arya and Sansa).
I'm sure they pitched a modified ending for S4 that basically checks-off all the boxes that got checked-off by S8, but HBO didn't want it. It really is George's fault for not doing the 5-year gap. It would have given the show a natural stopping point at just the spot that D&D wanted to bail and would have allowed for spin-offs that specifically handle shit like Arya becoming a ninja and Sansa becoming big brained Thot-iavelli, if necessary. Or just go on hiatus and resume in 5 years, or wait for the books to finish. Whatever.

Time skip would have worked fine. Most characters were in "training" states where they could jump ahead five years and get caught up. The only real two it wouldn't work so well for would be Cersei (she'd have to rule for five years and the situation was getting complex so it'd need a lot of backstory) and Stannis (he's in the middle of a war). He could have had Stannis be he takes Winterfell then gets bogged down by winter and just turtles, but there's really no way to hand wave what Cersei does for five years.
