If you are totally new this is the path I would go

Call of Pripyat first, then Shadow of Chernobyl, and then Clear Sky last. I know it makes no fucking sense to play the last game in the franchise first but CoP is the most forgiving of the franchise, you start with a good amount of gear, the hud/pda is cleaner, and the game didnt go nuts with the weapon degrading til Clear Sky. Play on Veteran or Master because the game works on the idea that the difficulty setting isnt just applied to you but to the NPCs. So a single headshot kill on Master applies to you but to ur enemies as well. No mods, go vanilla then add mods later on. CoP is the most forgiving option, if you wanna tough it out then go the order of the plot (Clear Sky then SOC, then COP).
