No. He was last seen in the books marching off to fight the Boltons. Ramsay tried sending a fake letter at the end of the most recent book saying Stannis had died to demoralize his followers. But in one of the promo chapters for the next book, it's revealed he's still alive and laying siege to Winterfell.
It seems likely that Stannis will win and then tragically die of the cold. He never burned his daughter, though this could still potentially happen. Although, when Melisandre asks to burn more human sacrifices, he rebukes her and tells her to "Pray harder." Twenty Goodmen is still a fun meme, though.

No, he wrote them to make his world more complex as alive, same reason he wrote others like the one when the Ironborn take the Shield Islands, most of Davos ones, why he made Dany go to Qarth instead of just leading her to Astapor, the whole Jamie ending the war at the Riverlands story, and I'd say even Lady Stoneheart is filler in the same way fAegon is.

Dany was thousands of kilometers away and the dragons were attacked by the people that came with Quentyn, who was trying to steal one of them.
He has a part to play, but a guy who spawned in the middle (more like in the second half) of the series is not going to be a protagonist. Dany is also the result of Varys as much as fAegon is, I'd say even more. And I'm not saying he won't do something of significance, being the reason people start to see the danger of Mad Dany is a pretty big deal.
