Here is the deal; a ton of extra footage was conceived and shot by D&D and filmed with the intent to create three endings via editing.
First ending (television one):
>>John kills Danny >>Drogon burns the throne, takes Danny's body >>Greyworm lets John/Tyrion go and John joins the Night Watch and fucks off to be with the Wildlings >>Bran made King, North is independent >>Arya goes sailing west
Second ending: >>John kills Danny >>Drogon kills John, burning him and Danny's bodies to ash and flies off >>Tyrion is saved at the Dragon Pit by Sansa, who reminds everyone that Tyrion is her husband and Grayworm backs down when he realizes how fucked he is if he keeps pressing the issue. >>Arya and Gendry get together. Arya has a moment where she tells Gendry all of the horrible things she's done (mirroring Jamie/Brienne) and he tells her that he still loves her. >>Realm breaks up into seven separate kingdoms. No more King. Fragile peace, but everyone agrees to let shit go and try and get along. >>Final scene is an extended version of Sansa's corronation. Tyrion is her hand/husband. Brienne her bodyguard. Arya, Gendry, Davros present.
>>John kills Danny. >>John surrenders to the Unsullied. >>Drogon personally intercedes and kills several Unsullied when Grayworm tries to kill John on the spot (this is why John lives; the Unsullied are terrified that Drogon will kill them if they kill the last Targ) >>Tyrion is put on trial at the Dragon Pit. To save John from being killed, Tyrion takes the fall for the assassination. Grayworm kills Tyrion (stabbed in the head with a spear). >>The Unsullied claim Kings Landing as their home. >>John decides to go into exile because of Tyrion's sacrifice. Plans to go North beyond the wall with the Wildlings. >>Arya and Bran go with him. Bran due to the 3 Eyed Raven's work in the South being done, Arya meanwhile doesn't want to leave John and comments about how she wants to explore beyond the wall. >>In this version, the three Starks go beyond the wall while Sansa, Brienne, and Davros watch is the final scene.
The footage was shot in modular fashion so that it could be mixed and matched, depending on the decided upon ending. Stuff like Drogon stealing Danny's body wasn't a hook for a revival down the line; it was done because the writers wanted Drogon's reaction to be like a child reacting to it's mother's death and not wanting to be separated from her.
Sadly, the modular nature of it meant plot holes came about (like why John wasn't killed on the spot).
In general, the plan was for the Kingdome to self-destruct in the wake of Danny's destruction of Kings Landing. Go back to individual fiefdoms with an uneasy peace. Bran becoming King was a last minute change ordered by HBO. They wanted a more definitive happy ending for the kingdom, which they pushed hard when D&D insisted Danny had to die.
