to the west was the undying lands, basically found by sailing straight off of arda instead of following the curvature of the world. it's been inhabited longer than middle earth by the maiar and valar who are basically minor gods or angels, plus a couple of funky trees were around for a while. the elves are hardly in exile; but the elves originally split into 2 groups: those who continued travelling west from where they were born, and the ones who stopped in middle earth. The ones who stopped are now, at the end of the 3rd era, sailing west with the last of the elves who know the way to valinor. After that, middle earth is on its own until someone comes back the other way.
