It's actually a simpler answer; they pulled all the reactor control rods out, they were tipped with Graphite which turns up the reaction. The reactor started to spike due to the turbine test spinning down (and reduced coolant) and they panicked, pressed the SCRAM button (AZ5) and whereas dropping 1 or even 10 control rods likely would have been fine, dropping over 100 rods all at once caused an IMMINENCE spike in power output, a sudden burst of steam pressure that burst the reactor, produced a shit ton of H2 gas, and then when the reactor opened, the H2 gas had enough space to drop below the upper flammability limit, and ignited for the larger explosion.
