A representative republic is governed by a constitution, which clearly lays out what the government can and cannot do, the rights of the people, and how the government functions, etc. In a true democracy, the majority may rule as they please. This is why democracies typically must form a coalition government in order to have a sound enough majority to pass their rules and legislative agendas.

Also, the electoral college is a safeguard against having the higher population of largely useless asswipes in the cities rule over the rural people who actually grow their fucking food and manufacture most of their goods.
