This is best exemplified in the character Steve the Drunk. He's a down on his luck guy who resorts to racism to make himself feel better about his lot in life. He had some of the most racist outbursts, and he even organized a lynch mob, but he also had moments of pure unblemished joy like when he helped push Bullock's son on Nuttal's bike. He also legitimately cared for the horses in the stable.
