D&D were so obsessed with subverting different plot/storylines that everything that was of supposed significance in the seasons prior to this meant absolutely fuckall in the end. All that time watching the prior seasons and learning about Jon Snow's true heritage, and how the NK first came into being etc. was all completely meaningless.

It was just extremely rushed but the ultimate outcomes could have been made good. There was no way in hell either Dany or Jon would have ended up on the throne anyway, from a meta perspective.
