This season was just tedious and flat. There were no real sub-plots. The Long Night was just a consecutive series of battle tropes that turned the fight for humanity into a cheap zombie flick with no meaningful connection.

The final episode was at least one third of characters walking and looking at the ruined city, wearing out the sentiment quickly. Another third of it was two dimensional babble about remorse and perhaps the most random, ad hoc commentary on statecraft imaginable.

There was no feeling to any of it because the effort to write well wasn't there. It was a huge budget as a send off to finish a project and delegate hopes for its appeal entirely to special effects. Had they bothered to spend as much time on the others as they did on Jaime and the Mountain, they couldve had an exceptional ending. Instead, they cut the episodes down to six, blow the budget on battle effects and give long winding jejune spotlights to trite narratives.

It would've been nobler for HBO to simply do the Deadwood manuver where they simply stop making it mid series than to absolutely ruin seven previous seasons of truly wonderful story telling, writing and acting. Instead, it ended with less class and dignity than a super-hero sequel.
