I might have to put 2 or 3 above 1 but this is pretty much on point. Too much recency bias here with 8, which contained nothing as shitty as dorne and late-period ramsay

I unironically believe the first 4 seasons are great, 5 is pretty good but a step down, but 6 is about on par with the first 4 seasons despite feeling more "Hollywoodized", especially with The Door Episode, Ramsay and The Winds of Winter finale is one of the show's best episodes. It's the moment Season 7 Episode 1 starts that the show goes to the shitter.

S6's ending episodes were great, but the writing in the earlier episodes was super sloppy & the epitome of "X needs to happen to set up Y so we're just going to have the characters do it without trying to follow the universe's rules" style of writing that made S7 & S8 bad.

If I'm being honest though, I thoroughly enjoyed every season up until this one - didn't notice many problems until 7. I don't even hate this season, but it's definitely the weakest of the bunch.

That's because 1-4 are still about muh politics. The most obvious decline after the books are gone is how politics takes a back seat to fantasy action.
The later seasons are almost devoid of strategy.

I barely remember anything about it besides the fact that this is when I started to lose interest. 1 through 4 were amazing and I loved them so much, 5 came out and I still liked it but the magic wasn't there anymore, 6 I watched out of habit, 7 was when I realised I'd been fucking a corpse for the past two years.

Dorne plot was extremely bad, and there were aspects of the Dany story that we're awful aka selmy dying like a bitch. Plus it's the season where it seems like all the "bad guys" can't lose. Reek storyline was trite by that point as well.

False, season 5 was the start point of the decline but season 6 picked it back again to its greatness, season 6 might be my favourite season of all, but then everything went to the bottom of the barrel on season 7, I can't believe there's people that liked season 7, it was even worse than the 8th one.

Dorne plot + High Sparrow plot + Arya in the House of Black and White plot all happened at once and they were all fucking terrible.

I don't like how that episode was called The Winds of Winter but it has nothing to do with the "winter is coming" part of the plot.

1-3 are top 3 for sure. 4 > 5 > 6 > 7 > 8.

2 > 1 > 3 or 1 > 2 >3.

The first four are so good that I feel like you can swap them around since it really comes down to personal preference. 6 and 8 are definitely better than 5 and 7 though.
