You can name the decent originals that got produced this decade on one hand. The ones that implode tend to be forgettable but are the norm.

You can define "decent" any way you like, and Yuasa, Hosoda and Shinkai seems to be doing exactly what they want. They've put out numerous movies.

After reading his biography I have even bigger respect for Kurosawa's best lifelong friend from lizard movies. Without him his later movies like Ran and Kagemusha wouldn't look the same.

In the 80s~90s Japan was tied for the richest country in the world (Japan owned 80% of New York real estate), then the bubble collaps in the early 2000s.
Japan still went well because of the good infrastructure and money stored up, it started depleting and now all they can make is shitty low grade comedies and anime adaptations that will make them a lot of $$$.

Then the cycle continues, they keep producing low quality garbage then talent is gone.
